Background And Aims: In previous studies, the Pro12Ala polymorphism in the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma 2 (PPAR-γ2) was shown to be associated with both lipid metabolism and longevity. We examined whether the polymorphism continued to be associated with abnormal levels of serum lipid/lipoprotein among elderly subjects (≥90 years).
Methods: The Pro12Ala variant was examined using polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Abnormal levels of serum lipid/lipoprotein were defined according to the criteria provided by the Chinese Medical Association (2004). Abnormal criteria were triglyceride (TG) >5.18 mmol/l, total cholesterol (TC) >1.7 mmol/l, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) >3.37 mmol/l and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) <1.04 mmol/l).
Results: The sample included 673 unrelated Chinese individuals aged 90-108 years (mean age: 93.54 ± 3.54 years) and 67.3% females. Genotype frequencies of the Pro12Ala polymorphism were 0% Ala12Ala, 8.9% Pro12Ala, 91.1% Pro12Pro. Neither differences in the levels of serum lipid/lipoprotein nor the prevalence of their abnormal levels was significant between subjects who were or were not 12Ala carriers. Unadjusted and adjusted multiple logistic regressions showed that the odds ratios (OR) for abnormal levels of serum lipid/lipoprotein were not associated with the Pro12Ala polymorphism in PPAR-γ2.
Conclusions: Levels of serum lipid/lipoprotein were not associated with the Pro12Ala polymorphism in PPAR-γ2 among Chinese nonagenarians and centenarians, which was different from the general population.

We conducted this cross-sectional study to investigate the independent associations between lipid metabolites and osteoporotic fractures among participants aged 40-69 years from the UK Biobank. Serum lipid, lipoprotein levels and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) based metabolic biomarkers were measured at the baseline. We conducted multivariable logistic analyses to investigate potential independent associations between concentrations of lipid metabolites and osteoporotic fractures in both men and women.

Background And Aims: Patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) have shown alterations in the affinity of IgG anti-leptin antibodies which are possibly related to metabolic alterations. In the present exploratory study, we analyzed serum samples from adults with T2D classified by body mass index (BMI) and evaluated the relationship of IgG anti-leptin antibodies with body composition, metabolic and cardiovascular risk parameters.
Methods: Serum IgG anti-leptin antibodies (total, free and immune complexes fractions) were measured by in-house ELISA.

This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of 20 mg of Cuban policosanol in blood pressure (BP) and lipid/lipoprotein parameters of healthy Japanese subjects via a placebo-controlled, randomized, and double-blinded human trial. After 12 weeks of consumption, the policosanol group showed significantly lower BP, glycated hemoglobin (HbA), and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels. The policosanol group also showed lower aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and γ-glutamyl transferase (γ-GTP) levels at week 12 than those at week 0: A decrease of up to 9% ( < 0.

Okara is a high-fiber food by-product that can be biotransformed with to improve its nutritional value and palatability. This research aims to assess postprandial changes in glycemic-related and lipid-related outcomes in middle-aged and older Singaporeans following okara- and biovalorized okara-containing biscuit consumption. Fifteen participants (58 ± 6 years old, mean ± SD) completed the randomized crossover study.
