We address the issue of jointly detecting brain activity and estimating underlying brain hemodynamics from functional MRI data. We adopt the so-called Joint Detection Estimation (JDE) framework that takes spatial dependencies between voxels into account. We recast the JDE into a missing data framework and derive a Variational Expectation-Maximization (VEM) algorithm for its inference. It follows a new algorithm that has interesting advantages over the previously used intensive simulation methods (Markov Chain Monte Carlo, MCMC): tests on artificial data show that the VEM-JDE is more robust to model mis-specification while additional tests on real data confirm that it achieves similar performance in much less computation time.

In this work, a new fluorescent sensor for detecting Cu was developed based on the Rhodamine derivative. It displayed strong fluorescence enhancement upon the addition of Cu, and other common metal ions do not significantly affect the optical properties of the sensor. This optical signal change caused solely by Cu is due to the opening of the lactone amide spiro ring structure, resulting in fluorescence emission.

Cu-doped LaCu Mn O perovskites have been used as a model system for a joint experimental and theoretical assessment of the influence of the Cu doping level on the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties. The different Cu-doped phases LaCuMnO (LCM37), LaCuMnO (LCM55), and LaCuMnO (LCM73) including the respective Cu- and Mn-free benchmark materials LaCuO (LC) and LaMnO (LM) have been studied by magnetization measurements and electronic paramagnetic resonance. Ferromagnetic behavior was detected for pure LM and all Cu-doped perovskites, whereas antiferromagnetic behavior was revealed for LaCuO.
