A new electrochemical immunoassay strategy for direct detection of carcinoembryoninc antigen (CEA) in serum was developed by using multiarmed star-like platinum nanowires (PtNWs) with biomolecular assembly as signal tags on an anti-CEA-functionalized graphene sensing platform. Initially, the PtNWs were synthesized via a wet chemical method, and then the synthesized PtNWs were used for the co-immobilization of CEA and horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Compared with platinum nanoparticles, the prepared PtNWs could provide a large room for the conjugation of HRP and CEA. With a competitive-type immunoassay format, the assay was performed in two types of supporting electrolytes including new born cattle serum (NBCS) and acetate buffer solution (ABS, pH 5.5), respectively. Similar detection limit (LOD) of 5.0 pg mL(-1) vs. 1.0 pg mL(-1) but narrower dynamic working linear range of 0.01-60 ng mL(-1) vs. 0.002-80 ng mL(-1) was obtained toward CEA standards in the NBCS compared to the ABS. The intra-assay coefficients of variation (CVs) were 4.3%, 8.6%, and 6.2% at 0.05, 10, and 40 ng mL(-1) CEA, respectively, while the inter-assay CVs were 7.6%, 10.5%, and 8.9% at the above-mentioned levels, respectively. In addition, the selectivity and stability of the electrochemical immunosensor were acceptable. Importantly, the developed method was used to assay clinical serum specimens, receiving a good relation with those obtained from the referenced method.

We report on the construction and the dynamics of monodisperse star-shaped particles, mimicking, at the mesoscale, star polymers. Such multiarm star-like particles result from the self-assembly of gold nanoparticles, forming the core, with tip-linked filamentous viruses (M13 bacteriophages) acting as spines in a sea urchin-like structure. By combining fluorescence and dark-field microscopy with dynamic light scattering, we investigate the diffusion of these hybrid spiny particles.

The traditional iron chelator deferoxamine (DFO) has been widely used in the treatment of iron overload disease. However, DFO has congenital disadvantages, including a very short circular time and non-negligible toxicity. Herein, we designed a novel multi-arm conjugate for prolonging DFO duration in vivo and reducing cytotoxicity.

Self-assembly of 21-arm star-like diblock copolymer in bulk and under cylindrical confinement.

Phase behaviors of a 21-arm star-like diblock copolymer in bulk and under confinement were explored by using the pseudo-spectral method of a self-consistent mean field theory. An asymmetrical phase diagram in bulk was constructed by comparing the free energy of different structures. The gyroid phase was found to possess a large phase region when the inner block in the star-like diblock copolymer has a small volume fraction, suggesting the propensity to form the gyroid phase under this condition.

Here we designed a new electrochemical immunoassay protocol for determination of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) using nanoplatinum-enclosed gold nanocores (Pt@Au) as catalytically promoted nanolabels on the carbon nanospheres and graphene-modified immunosensor. The Pt@Au nanolabels were synthesized and functionalized with monoclonal anti-CEA antibodies and glucose oxidase (GOx). Using the functional Pt@Au nanolabels as molecular tags, the assay was implemented relative to glucose-hydroquinone system with a sandwich-type immunoassay.

A novel nonpeptide, multiarmed oligo-arginyl derivative was engineered as a cell-penetration enhancer for the delivery of bioactive macromolecules and colloidal drug systems. Hepta-arginyl-maltotriosylamido-N-acetyl-dodecanoyl acid (Arg(7)-Malt-NAcC(12) acid) was synthesized through a carefully designed multistep chemical protocol, as follows: (1) maltotriose derivatization with 12-amino-dodecanoic acid and acetylation of the free amino group; (2) esterification of the maltotriosyl hydroxyl groups with 2-bromo-isobutyryl bromide; and (3) synthesis of star-like oligomer bearing multiple copies of arginine moieties under atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) conditions. The intermediates and final product were characterized by (1)H NMR, IR, mass spectrometry, colorimetric assays, and elemental analysis.
