Avibacterium (Haemophilus) paragallinarum (A. paragallinarum) is a causative agent of infectious coryza in chickens and is classified into three serovars by agglutination tests. In an effort to identify the serovars easily, PCR and PCR-RFLP were employed. As the target gene for PCR, the hypervariable region of HMTp210, which encodes the HA antigen, was used. PCR using primer sets around the hypervariable region amplified 0.8, 1.1 and 1.6 kbp fragments for serovars A, B and C, respectively. Alternatively, the 1.6 kbp fragments were amplified with another primer pair encompassing the hypervariable region and was subjected to digestion with Bgl II, which resulted in the detection of serovar-specific digestion patterns. These results indicate that PCR and PCR-RFLP using the hypervariable region of HMTp210 are alternative methods to identify the serovar of A. paragallinarum.

Fleas (Insecta, Siphonaptera) are the known vectors of serious bacterial pathogens, such as Yersinia pestis and Rickettsia typhi. The microbiota of fleas has been poorly investigated although it has a known influence on vector competence. Here, we report and analyse the microbiota of 577 flea specimens from Madagascar, a hotspot of plague transmission.

KD01, a third-generation conditionally replicating adenovirus serotype 5 developed by our team, has approved by the China Center for Drug Evaluation (CDE) for Phase I clinical trials (NCT06552598). However, 60% seroprevalence of anti-Ad5 neutralizing antibodies is a major hurdle for Ad5-based oncolytic viruses. To address this issue, we developed oAd5/35-HF, a fourth-generation oncolytic adenovirus vector designed to enhance infection efficiency and evade pre-existing neutralizing antibodies (NABs).

Tamoxifen is essential in treating estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer, primarily through its active metabolite, endoxifen. Emerging research suggests potential interactions between tamoxifen and gut microbiota. This study investigates the effects of tamoxifen on gut microbiota composition in postmenopausal ER+ and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 negative (HER2-) breast cancer patients and explores correlations between gut microbiota and endoxifen plasma levels.

The mesostigmatid tropical rat mite, Ornithonyssus bacoti, is an important cause of disease in small rodents, and of gamasoidosis in humans when they come into contact with infestations. Most reports of O. bacoti infestations are from warmer parts of the Americas, southern Europe and Asia; and infection has only rarely been recorded in northern Europe.

Exploration of the microbiome has been referred to as a final frontier in biological research. This is due to its precedence for generating insights on the holistic functioning of organismal biology by exploring the interactions between hosts and their associated symbiotic organisms. The microbiomes of many vertebrate groups still require exploration to advance current knowledge and fill previous knowledge gaps.
