To prevent afterbirth and early postpartum hemorrhages the authors used prostenone in 46 (the main group) and oxytocin in 20 females (control group). Intraplacental blood pressure and coagulation parameters were studied. With prostenone, the mean amount of the blood loss turned to be significantly lower (137 +/- 13 ml) than with oxytocin (208 +/- 17 ml). Administration of prostenone led to a significant elevation of prothrombin index alone and tolerance to heparine. As there was an insignificant difference between the parameters in the main and control groups, the mechanism of prostenone's effect on the myometrium required further studies.

Corneal cross-linking (CXL) is an effective method to prevent the progression of keratoconus. CXL combined with hypotonic riboflavin solution is a modified treatment for thin corneas, which are deemed to be below the safe thickness threshold. In this study, rabbit corneas were subjected to different hydration levels using different osmolarity of riboflavin dextran solutions before CXL.

Unlabelled: Acute hypoxic exercise will cause insufficient oxygen supply in brain tissue, and a succession of variations such as central dysfunction will occur. For example, the muscles don't have an adequate supply of oxygen, which leads to decrease in exercise capacity (Imray et al., 2005) [1].

Our previous work had identified that at the acupuncture point (acupoint), acupuncture-induced ATP release was a pivotal event in the initiation of analgesia. We aimed to further elucidate the degradation of ATP by CD39. Acupuncture was administered at Zusanli acupoint on arthritis rats, and pain thresholds of the hindpaws were determined.

Osteopontin Regulates AQP4 Expression by TRPV4 Activation in Müller Cells: Implications for Retinal Homeostasis.

Facultad de Ciencias Médicas, Departamento de Ciencias Fisiológicas, Laboratorio de Biomembranas, Universidad de Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

During the intense neuronal activity in the retina, Müller cells are exposed to a hypotonic environment and activate a regulatory volume decrease (RVD) response, which depends on Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) and the calcium channel Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid 4 (TRPV4). It was reported that Osteopontin (OPN), a cytokine and component of the extracellular matrix (ECM), may modulate the RVD of Müller cells. In other cell types, OPN participates in cell survival and migration, which Müller cells undergo to maintain retinal homeostasis.
