Background And Aims: There is evidence that the polymorphisms of the genes involved in folate metabolism may be associated with higher risk of Down syndrome (DS) pregnancy. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of A80G polymorphism in reduced folate carrier 1 (RFC1) gene on the maternal risk for DS.

Methods: In our study, twenty-two DS mothers and forty-two mothers who had no children with DS were evaluated. Genomic DNA was isolated from whole peripheral blood collected on EDTA, using peqGOLD blood DNA mini kit (ATP Biotech) following the manufacturer's instructions.

Results: The results show that the frequencies of RFC1 alleles, as well as the frequencies of RFC1 A80G genotypes (GG, GA, AA, GA+AA) do not correlate with DS pregnancies, demonstrating no difference between the case and control groups.

Conclusions: In the present study, we did not find any statistically significant association between RFC-1 polymorphic genotype and history of DS pregnancies; thus, the relationship between RFC-1 polymorphism and DS appears to be only a supposition and the next step in our study is the catamnestic evaluation of our patients with DS babies for two years.

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder with various contributing factors. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying PCOS is essential for developing effective treatments. This study aimed to identify hub genes and investigate potential molecular mechanisms associated with PCOS through a combination of bioinformatics analysis and Mendelian randomization (MR).

Background: Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy for rectal cancer improves surgical outcomes and reduces recurrence but can cause low anterior resection syndrome (LARS), affecting quality of life. This study aims to predict the risk of LARS in male patients with mid-low rectal cancer after laparoscopic total mesorectal excision (TME).

Methods: Clinical data from 203 male patients with mid-low rectal cancer who underwent neoadjuvant therapy and laparoscopic resection were collected.

Background: Thermal damage may lead to inflammation of the peeled mucosal surface during endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD).

Aim: To determine the effect of Joule heat on the onset of post-ESD electrocoagulation syndrome (PECS).

Methods: In this prospective study, PECS was characterized by in-hospital fever (white blood cell count: ≥ 10000 μ/L or body temperature ≥ 37.

Background: Premature infants are at high risk for neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and secondary infections. This study aims to investigate the association between immunoinflammatory markers-the systemic immune inflammation index (SII), systemic inflammation response index (SIRI), and neutrophil-to-albumin ratio (NAR)-and the risk of developing RDS in premature infants.

Methods: A total of 2164 premature infants were enrolled in this retrospective study.

Purpose: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the associations between telomere length and telomerase activity in subjects with and without metabolic syndrome (MetS).

Methods: The meta-analysis protocol was registered in the PROSPERO database. The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and LILACS databases were searched for studies reporting telomere length or telomerase activity in adult men and non-pregnant women with and without MetS.
