Objective: The objective of the study was to determine whether serum bicarbonate (HCO₃) concentration can accurately predict venous pH in the evaluation of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).

Methods: A retrospective review of patients who presented to a children's hospital emergency department and received an International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision code related to DKA or diabetes mellitus was performed. To be eligible for inclusion and data abstraction, patients had blood sampled simultaneously for venous blood gas and metabolic panel. A linear regression model was created using pH (dependent variable) and HCO₃ (predictor). The diagnostic performance and accuracy of HCO₃ to discriminate abnormal pH were evaluated using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis.

Results: Three hundred patients met the inclusion criteria. The linear relationship between pH and HCO₃ using the Pearson correlation coefficient was found to be R = 0.89 (confidence interval [CI], 0.83-0.95; R = 0.79). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis that maximized sensitivity and specificity demonstrated that a HCO₃ 18.5 or less predicts pH less than 7.3 (area under the curve = 0.97; CI, 0.94-0.99; sensitivity, 93%; specificity, 91%), and a HCO₃ 10.5 or less predicts pH less than 7.1 (area under the curve = 0.97; CI, 0.95-0.99; sensitivity, 97%; specificity, 88%).

Conclusions: Serum bicarbonate accurately predicts abnormal venous pH in children with DKA. Venous pH determination may not be necessary for all patients being evaluated for DKA.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the relationship between serum bicarbonate levels and 28-day mortality in critically ill patients with infective endocarditis using data from the MIMIC-IV database.
  • Patients with higher serum bicarbonate levels upon ICU admission showed significantly lower mortality rates, suggesting that bicarbonate levels can be a potential prognostic marker.
  • The findings indicate that monitoring bicarbonate levels could help assess risk and guide the clinical management of patients with infective endocarditis.

Over half million individuals suffer from chronic kidney disease (CKD) worldwide. In addition to raising the possibility of cardiovascular diseases, skeletal myopathy remains a challenging complication that is highly correlated with mortality and a lower quality of life. Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) is an active cytokine for mobilization of immunological and hematopoietic stem cells that can replace exogenous stem cell infusions.

Prolonged use of antiretroviral agents has been clearly associated with nephrotoxicity, suggesting deterioration of renal function in patients receiving Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART). The present study was designed to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of resveratrol (RV) in the treatment toxins-induced renal impairment. Twenty-four adult male Wistar rats weighing 70-90 g were divided into four groups and subjected to the following treatments: Control A (distilled water), B (HAART), C (RV-2.

Background/objective: Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is typically but not exclusively seen in patients with a history of diabetes mellitus.

Case Report: This is a case of 39 year-old male who was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis based on characteristic symptoms and positive CT findings on presentation. Laboratory testing revealed elevated serum glucose 251 mg/dL, low serum bicarbonate 8 mmol/L, increased anion gap 21, and elevated serum beta-hydroxybutyrate 9.

Background: Albumin, a vital component in regulating human blood oncotic pressure, plays an important role in the prediction of prognosis in pediatric patients.Previous research identified significant differences in serum albumin levels of healthy and critically ill children.

Methods: The present study aims to investigate the correlation between albumin levels measured during pediatric intensive care unit(PICU) admission and clinical outcomes.
