We generated a genetically engineered Klebsiella pneumoniae strain (AK-VOT) to eliminate by-product formation during production of 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PD) from glycerol. In the present study, the glycerol-metabolizing properties of the recombinant strain were examined during fermentation in a 5 L bioreactor. As expected, by-product formation was completely absent (except for acetate) when the AK-VOT strain fermented glycerol. However, 1,3-PD productivity was severely reduced owing to a delay in cell growth attributable to a low rate of glycerol consumption. This problem was solved by establishing a two-stage process separating cell growth from 1,3-PD production. In addition, nutrient co-supplementation, especially with starch, significantly increased 1,3-PD production from glycerol during fed-batch fermentation by AK-VOT in the absence of by-product formation.

Lignocellulosic biomass-based plastics provide a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based plastics by converting agricultural by-products into value-added materials, promoting a circular economy. This study investigates the development of thermoplastics from sugar beet pulp (SBP), a by-product rich in cellulose and pectin. A one-pot direct transesterification process was used to fully substitute hydroxy groups in SBP with acyl chains of varying lengths (C2-C10), achieving up to 96 % substitution.

The harmful by-product of paracetamol is known as N-Acetyl-p-benzoquinoneimine, (NAPQI). When paracetamol is given at therapeutic dosages or in excess, it undergoes Phase I metabolism in the liver via Cytochrome P-450 2E1 (CYP2E1), and then it produces NAPQI. Previous studies reported that a non-ionic surfactant known as Brij 35 (Polyoxyethylene lauryl ether) has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of CYP2E1 and P-glycoprotein (P-gp).

OH-mediated advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are widely used in wastewater treatment and drinking water purification. Recently, an increasing number of studies have indicated that common inorganic nitrogen ions can efficiently generate •OH under UV irradiation, demonstrating strong performance in the degradation of various contaminants. Conversely, the presence of inorganic nitrogen ions in UV or other oxidation processes dramatically increases the yield of toxic nitro (so)-aromatic products and the formation potential of nitrogenous disinfection by-products with high genotoxicity and cytotoxicity.

Climate change and food safety standards have intensified research into plant-based compounds as alternatives to dietary supplements in animal feed. These compounds can reduce enteric methane (CH) emissions and the formation of ruminal ammonia. This study investigated the effects of radiata pine bark extract (PBE) supplementation on CH production, ruminal fermentation parameters, and nutrient disappearance using the rumen simulation technique in diets with different forage-to-concentrate (F:C) ratios.

Grape pomace (GP) is a by-product rich in phytochemicals, including extractable polyphenols (EPPs) and non-extractable polyphenols (NEPPs), which have distinct metabolic fates that may affect their biological activities. The benefits of GP have been reported in relation to obesity and its comorbidities, particularly when administered preventively focusing on EPPs. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of EPPs and NEPPs from GP as a treatment for obesity and its associated metabolic alterations.
