Decoupling Intrinsic Metal Ion Reduction Rates from Structural Outcomes in Multimetallic Nanoparticles.

J Am Chem Soc

Simultaneously controlling both stoichiometry and atom arrangement during the synthesis of multimetallic nanoparticles is often challenging, especially when the desired metal precursors exhibit large differences in their intrinsic reduction kinetics. In such cases, traditional synthetic methods often lead to the formation of exclusively phase-segregated structures. In this study, we demonstrate that the relative reduction kinetics of the metal precursors can be manipulated independently of their intrinsic differences in reduction rates by modulating the instantaneous concentrations of the metal cation precursors.

Preserving surface strain in nanocatalysts via morphology control.

Sci Adv

Department of Materials Science and NanoEngineering, Rice University, Houston, TX 77006, USA.

Engineering strain critically affects the properties of materials and has extensive applications in semiconductors and quantum systems. However, the deployment of strain-engineered nanocatalysts faces challenges, in particular in maintaining highly strained nanocrystals under reaction conditions. Here, we introduce a morphology-dependent effect that stabilizes surface strain even under harsh reaction conditions.

A sandwich electrochemical sensor was fabricated based on multi-walled carbon nanotubes/ordered mesoporous carbon/AuNP (MWCNTs/CMK-3/AuNP) nanocomposites and porous core-shell nanoparticles Au@PdNPs to achieve rapid and sensitive detection of AFB in complex matrices. MWCNTs/CMK-3/AuNP nanocomposite, which was prepared by self-assembly method, served as a substrate material to increase the aptamer loading and improve the conductivity and electrocatalytic activity of the electrode for the first signal amplification. Then, Au@PdNPs, which were synthesized by one-pot aqueous phase method, were applied as nanocarriers loaded with plenty of capture probe antibody (Ab) and signal molecule toluidine blue (Tb) to form the Au@PdNPs-Ab-Tb bioconjugates for secondary signal amplification.

ConspectusGas sensors are used in various applications to sense toxic gases, mainly for enhanced safety. Resistive sensors are particularly popular owing to their ability to detect trace amounts of gases, high stability, fast response times, and affordability. Semiconducting metal oxides are commonly employed in the fabrication of resistive gas sensors.

A core-shell nanostructure of gold nanoparticles@covalent organic framework (COF) loaded with palladium nanoparticles (AuNPs@COF-PdNPs) was designed for the rapid monitoring of catalytic reactions with surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The nanostructure was prepared by coating the COF layer on AuNPs and then in situ synthesizing PdNPs within the COF shell. With the respective SERS activity and catalytic performance of the AuNP core and COF-PdNPs shell, the nanostructure can be directly used in the SERS study of the catalytic reaction processes.
