Carbon monoxide molecules in their electronic, vibrational, and rotational ground state are highly attractive for trapping experiments. The optical or ac electric traps that can be envisioned for these molecules will be very shallow, however, with depths in the sub-milliKelvin range. Here, we outline that the required samples of translationally cold CO (X(1)Σ(+), v'' = 0, N'' = 0) molecules can be produced after Stark deceleration of a beam of laser-prepared metastable CO (a(3)Π(1)) molecules followed by optical transfer of the metastable species to the ground state via perturbed levels in the A(1)Π state. The optical transfer scheme is experimentally demonstrated and the radiative lifetimes and the electric dipole moments of the intermediate levels are determined.

The risk of severe outcomes of influenza increases during pregnancy. Whether vaccine-induced T cell memory-primed prepregnancy retains the ability to mediate protection during pregnancy, when systemic levels of several hormones with putative immunomodulatory functions are increased, is unknown. Here, using murine adoptive transfer systems and a translationally relevant model of cold-adapted live-attenuated influenza A virus vaccination, we show that preexisting virus-specific memory T cell responses are largely unaltered and highly protective against heterotypic viral challenges during pregnancy.

Several diatomic transition metal oxides, rare-earth metal oxides, and fluorides have the unusual property that their bond dissociation energy is larger than their ionization energy. In these molecules, bound levels above the ionization energy can be populated via strong, resonant transitions from the ground state. The only relevant decay channel of these levels is autoionization; predissociation is energetically not possible and radiative decay is many orders of magnitude slower.

Recombinantly produced collagens present a sustainable, ethical, and safe substitute for collagens derived from natural sources. However, controlling the folding of the recombinant collagens, crucial for replicating the mechanical properties of natural materials, remains a formidable task. Collagen-like proteins from willow sawfly are relatively small and contain no hydroxyprolines, presenting an attractive alternative to the large and post-translationally modified mammalian collagens.

lung perfusion (ESLP) is used for organ reconditioning, repair, and re-evaluation prior to transplantation. Since valid preclinical animal models are required for translationally relevant studies, we developed a 17 mL low-volume ESLP for double- and single-lung application that enables cost-effective optimal compliance "reduction" of the 3R principles of animal research. In single-lung mode, ten Fischer344 and Lewis rat lungs were subjected to ESLP and static cold storage using STEEN or PerfadexPlus.
