Trauma care prioritizes life-threatening conditions using the ABCDE algorithm based on the principle "treat first what kills first". As for catastrophic hemorrhage, a leading preventable cause of death in trauma, modifications of this algorithm are necessary in specific cases. In cold climates, life-threatening hypothermia poses additional challenges.

Background: Cold agglutinin disease (CAD) is an autoimmune hemolytic anemia that induces blood coagulation and hemolysis upon exposure to cold temperatures. Strict temperature control is essential to mitigate these effects, especially during surgical procedures where hypothermia is possible.
Case Presentation: A 57-year-old male, 165 cm and 72 kg, diagnosed with CAD, underwent cerebral vascular anastomosis.

Unlabelled: The purpose of this study is to compare the effects of two different ways of stopping incubator humidification on episodes of hypothermia, hyperthermia, hyponatraemia, hypernatraemia, or skin injury. The design is a single site, two-armed, parallel, randomised, clinical trial conducted between April 2019 and March 2022. The setting was a quaternary referral and teaching hospital in Queensland, Australia.

Body size of organisms is a key trait influencing nearly all aspects of their life history. Despite growing evidence of Bergmann's rule, there is considerably less known about the links between body size and the maximum capacity to thermoregulate of an animal in response to extreme cold or hot environment. Thermal characteristics such as resting metabolic rate (RMR) and non-shivering thermogenesis (NST), and the upper- and lower-critical temperatures of the thermal neutral zone (TNZ) were investigated in small and large body sized striped hamsters (Cricetulus barabensis).

Hypothermia in combination with infection presents a complex challenge in clinical and battlefield medicine. Multifaceted physiological and immunological consequences of hypothermia drastically change the risk, progression, and treatment of a concomitant infection. Managing hypothermia and infection in extreme cold settings is particularly relevant in an era with increased risk of military operations in Polar climates.
