A novel fungal species is described originating from the left occipital lobe of the cerebrum of an 18-month-old spayed female cat in Australia. Neurological disorder of the animal became apparent by circling movements and uncoordinated behaviour. Sequencing of the SSU rRNA gene reveals this strain as belonging to the genus Fonsecaea in Chaetothyriales. This order includes many black yeasts and relatives known as etiologic agents of disease in humans and animals, including several neurotropic species. Novelty of the species was corroborated by morphology and by multilocus sequencing of the ribosomal internal transcribed spacers (ITS) and partial sequences of the β-tubulin (BT2) and translation elongation factor (TEF1) genes. The strain is very similar to several strains recovered by a selective isolation technique from the natural environment in Brazil.

Zearalenone (ZEN) is one of the most common mycotoxins in maize, wheat, barley, sorghum, rye and other grains. ZEN contamination in feed is an international health issue due to its estrogenicity by competitively binding to estrogen receptors. Enzymatic detoxification of ZEN is superior to physical and chemical methods in terms of safety, environmental impact and preserving nutritional value and palatability, but is hampered by both the currently limited repertoire of detoxifying enzymes and the lack of knowledge about their structure-function relationships.

Proteins of the HD-domain superfamily employ a conserved histidine-aspartate (HD) dyad to coordinate diverse metallocofactors. While most known HD-domain proteins are phosphohydrolases, new additions to this superfamily have emerged such as oxygenases and lyases, expanding their functional repertoire. To date, three HD-domain oxygenases have been identified, all of which employ a mixed-valent FeFe cofactor to activate their substrates and utilize molecular oxygen to afford cleavage of C-C or C-P bonds via a diferric superoxo intermediate.
