Echography was found more preferable in the differentiation of diffuse and nodular types of goiter and in the detection of thyroid cancer. Scanography was shown to be a valuable method for the determination of a shape, topography and function of the thyroid and its zones as well as in the diagnosis of autoimmune thyroiditis.

A personalized clinical assessment: multi-sensor approach for understanding musculoskeletal health in the frail population.

Biomed Eng Online

September 2024

Dipartimento di Fisica, Politecnico di Milano, Piazza Leonardo da Vinci, 32, 20133, Milan, Italy.

Background: Sarcopenia is a muscle disorder causing a progressive reduction of muscle mass and strength, but the mechanism of its manifestation is still partially unknown. The three main parameters to assess are: muscle strength, muscle volume or quality and low physical performance. There is not a definitive approach to assess the musculoskeletal condition of frail population and often the available tests to be performed in those clinical bedridden patients is reduced because of physical impairments.

Vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT) is a rare new syndrome occurring after the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine immunization. Patients with VITT are characterized by a variable clinical presentation, likewise also the outcome of these patients is very variable. Here we report the lung ultrastructural findings in the course of VITT of a 58-year-old male patient.

Background: The purpose of this study was to use hypnosis in patients with congenital heart disease undergoing transesophageal echocardiography (TEE).

Methods: From January 2016 to July 2017, 50 adult patients undergoing TEE were randomly assigned to two groups: TEE in hypnosis (n = 23), TEE in sedation (n = 27). Vital parameters (heart rate [HR], blood pressure [BP], oxygen saturation [SO2] before, during and after the procedure) and drug administration were recorded.

Dyspnea and emotional states in health and disease.

Respir Med

May 2013

Fondazione Don Gnocchi, Section of Respiratory Rehabilitation, Florence, Italy.

Anxiety and depression can increase the intensity of dyspnea out of proportion to the impairment in cardiorespiratory function and may contribute to the degree of disability associated with dyspnea. The effect of anxiety/depression on the sensory and affective components of reported dyspnea in patients with respiratory disorders might be of particular importance in improving the accuracy of the diagnostic process. However, the exact cause-relationship between dyspnea and anxiety/depression are unclear.

Chest wall kinematics in young subjects with Pectus excavatum.

Respir Physiol Neurobiol

March 2012

Section of Respiratory Rehabilitation, Fondazione Don C. Gnocchi ONLUS (IRCCS) Pozzolatico, 50020 Firenze, Italy.

Quantifying chest wall kinematics and rib cage distortion during ventilatory effort in subjects with Pectus excavatum (PE) has yet to be defined. We studied 24 patients: 19 during maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV) and 5 during MVV and cycling exercise (CE). By optoelectronic plethysmography (OEP) we assessed operational volumes in upper rib cage, lower rib cage and abdomen.
