Two new steroidal glycosides, fragilioside A (1) and fragilioside B (2), along with five known compounds (3-7) were isolated from the gorgonian Dichotella fragilis (Ridleg) collected from the South China Sea. The structures of the new compounds (1 and 2) were elucidated by comprehensive analysis of spectral data, especially 2D NMR. The brine shrimp lethality and antifouling activity of the isolated compounds were also evaluated.

Recent studies have predominantly spotlighted bacterial diversity within coral microbiomes, leaving coral-associated fungi in the shadows of scientific inquiry. This study endeavors to fill this knowledge gap by delving into the biodiversity, distribution and functional differences of fungi associated with soft corals and , gorgonian coral and stony coral from the South China Sea. Leveraging high-throughput sequencing of fungal internal transcribed spacer-1 (ITS1) region of the rRNA gene, a total of 431 fungal amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) were identified in this study, which indicated that a large number of fungal communities were harbored in the South China Sea corals.

Excess osteoclastic activity leads to an imbalance in bone remodeling and causes most adult skeletal diseases. Natural products are a promising source to attenuate the osteoporosis and relevant diseases of bone loss. Herein, a bioassay-guided detection of gorgonian corals resulted in junceellolide D (JD), a briarane-type diterpenoid from gorgonian Dichotella gemmacea, showing significant inhibition against the receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand (RANKL)-induced osteoclast differentiation in bone marrow macrophages (BMMs) in vitro.

A new pregnane, 3α-hydroxy-7-ene-6,20-dione (1), and five known steroids (2-6), along with one known steroidal glycoside (7) were obtained from the fungus Cladosporium sp. WZ-2008-0042 cultured from a gorgonian Dichotella gemmacea collected from the South China Sea. Seven new briarane diterpenoids, gemmacolides AZ-BF (-), were isolated together with eight known analogues (-) from the South China gorgonian . Their structures were elucidated based on detailed spectroscopic analysis and a comparison with reported data. In an in vitro bioassay, these compounds exhibited different levels of growth inhibition activity against A549 and MG63 cells, giving continuous evidences about the biological contribution of functional groups at C-2, C-12, C-13, and C-16.
