Deformable image registration in the presence of considerable contrast differences and large size and shape changes presents significant research challenges. First, it requires a robust registration framework that does not depend on intensity measurements and can handle large nonlinear shape variations. Second, it involves the expensive computation of nonlinear deformations with high degrees of freedom. Often it takes a significant amount of computation time and thus becomes infeasible for practical purposes. In this paper, we present a solution based on two key ideas: a new registration method that generates a mapping between anatomies represented as a multicompartment model of class posterior images and geometries and an implementation of the algorithm using particle mesh approximation on Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) to fulfill the computational requirements. We show results on the registrations of neonatal to 2-year old infant MRIs. Quantitative validation demonstrates that our proposed method generates registrations that better maintain the consistency of anatomical structures over time and provides transformations that better preserve structures undergoing large deformations than transformations obtained by standard intensity-only registration. We also achieve the speedup of three orders of magnitudes compared to a CPU reference implementation, making it possible to use the technique in time-critical applications.

Tannic acid coordination assembly enhances the interfacial properties of salted egg white gel particles.

Int J Biol Macromol

December 2024

Cooperative Innovation Center of Industrial Fermentation, Ministry of education & Hubei province, National "111" Center for Cellular Regulation and Molecular Pharmaceutics, Hubei University of Technology, Wuhan, China. Electronic address:

Tannic acid (TA) has attracted the attention of researchers as a promising organic ligand capable of forming metal-organic coordination networks with various metal ions at interfaces to impact surface properties. In this study, we innovatively reported a self-assembly method for surface decoration by depositing TA/Fe coatings on the surface of desalted duck egg white nanoparticles (DEWN), further studying the oil/water interfacial properties of the modified particles. The results showed that the ratio and concentration of TA to Fe could modulate interfacial properties.

Study on the Extraction Technology and Antioxidant Capacity of Polysaccharides.

Foods

December 2024

School of Public Health, Guangzhou Medical University, Xinzao, Panyu District, Guangzhou 511436, China.

A red alga named was explored, and the extraction technology and antioxidant capacity of its polysaccharides were investigated. The crude polysaccharides were extracted using the ultrasound-assisted water extraction method, precipitated by alcohol, and purified using the trichloroacetic acid method. Subsequently, the scavenging rates of polysaccharides on hydroxyl, , and free radicals, were determined both prior to and following purification to evaluate their antioxidant activity.

In mass spectrometry-based proteomics, loss-minimized peptide purification techniques play a key role in improving sensitivity and coverage. We have developed a desalting tip column packed with thermoplastic polymer-coated chromatographic particles, named ChocoTip, to achieve high recoveries in peptide purification by pipet-tip-based LC with centrifugation (tipLC). ChocoTip identified more than twice as many peptides from 20 ng of tryptic peptides from Hela cell lysate compared to a typical StageTip packed with chromatographic particles entangled in a Teflon mesh in tipLC.

Quartz sand proppant is widely used in hydraulic fracturing and the extraction of low-permeability reservoirs to prevent fracture closure and enhance reservoir recovery effectively. The influence of proppant size and type on well productivity has been widely studied, but the mechanism of proppant surface wettability on the hydraulic fracture inflow performance has not been thoroughly investigated. To further understand the influence of proppant wettability on fracture inflow performance, in this work, a hydrophobic quartz sand proppant was prepared by a simple dip-coating method using silane solution with a static water contact angle of 136.

An Unstructured Mesh Reaction-Drift-Diffusion Master Equation with Reversible Reactions.

Bull Math Biol

Department of Mathematics and Department of Biology, Northeastern University, Boston, USA.

We develop a convergent reaction-drift-diffusion master equation (CRDDME) to facilitate the study of reaction processes in which spatial transport is influenced by drift due to one-body potential fields within general domain geometries. The generalized CRDDME is obtained through two steps. We first derive an unstructured grid jump process approximation for reversible diffusions, enabling the simulation of drift-diffusion processes where the drift arises due to a conservative field that biases particle motion.
