Effects of obstructive sleep apnea on nocturnal changes in blood pressure - a retrospective study.

Hypertens Res

January 2025

School of Medicine, College of Medicine, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Taipei, Taiwan; #155 Section 2, Linong Street, Taipei, 112, Taiwan.

To explore the effects of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) on nocturnal changes in blood pressure (BP), we enrolled 2037 participants who underwent polysomnography (PSG) between 2019 and 2020 and examined BP changes before and after sleep. BP was measured in the evening and the following morning using an electronic wrist sphygmomanometer in the supine position. The severity of OSA was determined by PSG and graded based on the apnea/hypopnea index (AHI).

State-dependent neurovascular modulation induced by transcranial ultrasound stimulation.

Med Biol Eng Comput

January 2025

School of Biomedical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, No.1954 Huashan Road, Shanghai, 200030, Shanghai, China.

Previous studies reported baseline state-dependent effects on neural and hemodynamic responses to transcranial ultrasound stimulation. However, due to neurovascular coupling, neither neural nor hemodynamic baseline alone can fully explain the ultrasound-induced responses. In this study, using a general linear model, we aimed to investigate the roles of both neural and hemodynamic baseline status as well as their interactions in ultrasound-induced responses.

Sleeve Gastrectomy and Gastric Bypass Impact in Patient's Metabolic, Gut Microbiome, and Immuno-inflammatory Profiles-A Comparative Study.

Obes Surg

January 2025

Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR) Area of Environment, Genetics and Oncobiology (CIMAGO), Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal.

Background: Bariatric surgery is the most long-term effective treatment option for severe obesity. The role of gut microbiome (GM) in either the development of obesity or in response to obesity management strategies has been a matter of debate. This study aims to compare the impact of two of the most popular procedures, sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (GB), on metabolic syndrome parameters and gut bacterial microbiome and in systemic immuno-inflammatory response.

"The biggest challenge is there's never a routine": a qualitative study of the time burdens of cancer care at home.

Support Care Cancer

January 2025

Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Transplantation, University of Minnesota, 516 Delaware Street SE, MMC 480, PWB 14-100, Minneapolis, MN, 55455, USA.

Purpose: As cancer care is increasingly delivered in the home, more tasks and responsibilities fall on patients and their informal care partners. These time costs can present significant mental, physical, and financial burdens, and are undercounted in current measures of time toxicity that only consider care received in formal healthcare settings.

Methods: Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with patients with gastrointestinal cancer and informal care partners at a single tertiary cancer center between March and October 2023.

Alcohol drinking leads to sex-dependent differentiation of T cells.

Eur J Trauma Emerg Surg

January 2025

Department of Trauma Surgery and Orthopedics, Goethe University, University Hospital, Frankfurt, Germany.

Objective: Global per capita alcohol consumption is increasing, posing significant socioeconomic and medical challenges also due to alcohol-related traumatic injuries but also its biological effects. Trauma as a leading cause of death in young adults, is often associated with an increased risk of complications, such as sepsis and multiple organ failure, due to immunological imbalances. Regulatory T cells play a crucial role in maintaining immune homeostasis by regulating the inflammatory response.
