Published: September 2011

Minimum achievable temperature of ~110 K is measured in a 5% doped Yb:YLF crystal at λ = 1020 nm, corresponding to E4-E5 resonance of Stark manifold. This measurement is in excellent agreement with the laser cooling model and was made possible by employing a novel and sensitive implementation of differential luminescence thermometry using balanced photo-detectors.

We report on the optical polarizability of microwave-shielded ultracold NaCs molecules in an optical dipole trap. While dressing a pair of rotational states with a microwave field, we observe a marked dependence of the optical polarizability on the intensity and detuning of the dressing field. To precisely characterize differential energy shifts between dressed rotational states, we establish dressed-state spectroscopy.

A high-sensitivity hot-wire anemometer is proposed for use with a cobalt-doped fiber (CDF) based long-period grating (LPG) heated optically by a 1480 nm laser. The CDF-LPG absorbs laser power and generates heat inherently, thereby eliminating the need for both metal coating and mode coupling devices that are usually required in optical fiber grating anemometers. The dip wavelength of the CDF-LPG shifts with airflow velocity due to the cooling effect of the airflow.

We present a dual isotope magneto-optical trap (MOT), simultaneous sub-Doppler laser cooling, and magnetic trapping of a spin-polarized K-K Bose-Fermi mixture realized in a single-chamber setup with an unenriched potassium dispenser as the source of atoms. We are able to magnetically confine more than 2.2 × 10 fermions ( = 9/2 ,  = 9/2) and 1.

This paper presents a comprehensive numerical investigation to simulate heat transfer and residual stress formation of Ti-6Al-4V alloy during the Laser Powder Bed Fusion process, using a finite element model (FEM). The FEM was developed with a focus on the effects of key process parameters, including laser scanning velocity, laser power, hatch space, and scanning pattern in single-layer scanning. The model was validated against experimental data, demonstrating good agreement in terms of temperature profiles and melt pool dimensions.

Hydrodynamic radius () is a descriptive metric of protein structure with the potential to impact drug development, disease diagnosis, and other important research areas of molecular biology. Common instrumental methods for molecular size characterization are disadvantageous due to high sample consumption, measurements made in non-physiological conditions, and/or inaccurate size determinations. Capillary Taylor dispersion analysis (TDA) is a molecular sizing method that utilizes nL sample volumes and achieves absolute size determination without calibration or comparison to standards.
