A study combining anion photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations on the transition metal suboxide series, Nb(2)O(y)(-) (y = 2-5), is described. Photoelectron spectra of the clusters are obtained, and Franck-Condon simulations using calculated anion and neutral structures and frequencies are used to evaluate the calculations and assign transitions observed in the spectra. The spectra, several of which exhibit partially resolved vibrational structure, show an increase in electron affinity with increasing cluster oxidation state. Hole-burning experiments suggest that the photoelectron spectra of both Nb(2)O(2)(-) and Nb(2)O(3)(-) have contributions from more than one structural isomer. Reasonable agreement between experiment and computational results is found among all oxides.

Secondary Transport Mechanisms in Amino Acid Fed Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal.

Chemosphere

December 2024

Gerald May Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering, The University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 87131, United States. Electronic address:

Enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) often fail to meet phosphorus discharge permit limits, indicating a need to improve EBPR to reduce environmental phosphorus discharges. EBPR designs are largely based on the Accumulibacter polyphosphate accumulating organism (PAO) metabolism, while understudied Tetrasphaera PAOs are equally important to EBPR in many facilities worldwide. Anaerobic organic carbon competition is believed to be a key driver of EBPR reliability.

Spectroscopy and Dynamics of the Dipole-Bound States of -, -, and -Methylphenolate Anions.

J Phys Chem A

December 2024

Department of Chemistry, KAIST, Daejeon 34141, Republic of Korea.

A photodetachment and photoelectron spectroscopic study by employing a cryogenically cooled ion trap combined with a velocity-map imaging setup has been carried out to unravel the vibrational structures and autodetachment dynamics of the dipole-bound states (DBSs) of -, -, and -methylphenolate anions (-, -, and -CHPhO). The electron binding energy of the DBS increases monotonically with the increase of the neutral dipole moment to give respective values of 66 ± 15, 123 ± 18, or 154 ± 14 cm for the -, -, or -isomer. The different electron-donating effects of the methyl moieties in the three geometrically different isomers seem to be reflected in the experiment.

QM/MM Calculations on Excited-State Proton Transfer and Photoisomerization of a Red Fluorescent Protein mKeima with Large Stokes Shift.

Biochemistry

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Theoretical and Computational Photochemistry, Ministry of Education, College of Chemistry, Beijing Normal University, Beijing 100875, China.

Large Stokes shift red fluorescent proteins (LSS-RFPs) are of growing interest for multicolor bioimaging applications. However, their photochemical mechanisms are not fully understood. Here, we employed the QM(XDW-CASPT2//CASSCF)/MM method to investigate the excited-state proton transfer and photoisomerization processes of the LSS-RFP mKeima starting from its cis neutral isomer.

While planar tetracoordinate (pt) centers have been extensively explored from carbon to other octal-row elements or their heavier analogs, their counterparts involving alkali (A) and alkaline-earth metals (Ae) remain elusive due to the large atomic radius and absence of p orbitals. In this work, we found six hitherto unknown anionic ptA (A4A-) and neutral ptAe (A4Ae) centers through an extensive exploration of potential energy surfaces. The D4h-symmetry ptBe structures in Li4Be and Na4Be emerge as the lowest-energy configurations, and all the other ptA/ptAe structures are higher in energy or saddle points.

This study focused on the development of cholesterol-free fusogenic liposomes with different surface charge with the aim of improving biofilm penetration. In vitro assessments of the liposomes included physical stability, biocompatibility, fusion with microbial cells, and the ability to penetrate established biofilms. Using dynamic light scattering, cholesterol-free, fusogenic liposomes were found to be < 200 nm in size with small size distribution (PDI < 0.
