Study Objectives: Both the (ICSD) and the sleep-wake disorders section of the (DSM) emphasize the importance of clinical judgment in distinguishing the normal from the pathological in sleep medicine. The fourth edition of the DSM (DSM-IV, 1994) introduced the clinical significance criterion (CSC) to standardize this judgment and enhance diagnostic reliability.

Methods: This review conducts a theoretical and historical content analysis of CSC presence, frequency, and formulation in the diagnostic criteria of sleep disorders.

Toxic and carcinogenic compounds, such as synthetic dyes and polyphenols, were widely employed and released as pollutants in a variety of industries, including textiles, food, and cosmetics. Biological oxidation process that used oxidizing enzymes to breakdown pollutant compounds were environmentally favorable. However, due to the cell toxicity of metal ions supplements used for the biosynthesis of oxidizing enzymes like laccase, their efficient application for biological degradation is limited.

Substitution load revisited: a high proportion of deaths can be selective.

Genetics

January 2025

Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona 85721, USA.

Haldane's Dilemma refers to the concern that the need for many "selective deaths" to complete a substitution (i.e. selective sweep) creates a speed limit to adaptation.

Purifying selection is a critical factor in shaping genetic diversity. Current theoretical models mostly address scenarios of either very weak or strong selection, leaving a significant gap in our knowledge. The effects of purifying selection on patterns of genomic diversity remain poorly understood when selection against deleterious mutations is weak to moderate, particularly when recombination is limited or absent.

Genetic and species rearrangements in microbial consortia impact biodegradation potential.

ISME J

January 2025

Universidad Pablo de Olavide, Centro Andaluz de Biología del Desarrollo/ Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas/ Junta de Andalucía, Seville, Spain.

Genomic reorganisation between species and horizontal gene transfer have been considered the most important mechanism of biological adaptation under selective pressure. Still, the impact of mobile genes in microbial ecology is far from being completely understood. Here we present the collection and characterisation of microbial consortia enriched from environments contaminated with emerging pollutants, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
