An efficient and practical method has been developed for the diversity-oriented synthesis of chromone-containing tripeptides via pseudo-five-component reaction between 3-formylchromones, Meldrum's acid, isocyanides and primary aromatic amines for the generation of a wide range of structurally interesting and pharmacologically significant compounds at ambient temperature. It is worth mentioning that in the course of this reaction, five new bonds (two C-C bonds, two C-N bonds and one C═O bond) are formed. In the present reaction three amide bonds are newly formed.

A pseudo-five-component reaction involving double decarboxylative 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of azomethine ylides with olefinic oxindoles for the diastereoselective synthesis of bispiro[oxindole-pyrrolidine]s is developed. The major diastereomers are unique butterfly shaped compounds with a plane of symmetry. Recyclable zeolite HY acid catalyst is used to promote the reaction, and only CO and HO are generated as byproducts.

Herein, a novel DABCO-based dicationic ionic liquid (bis-DIL) was easily prepared from the sonication of DABCO with 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol and then characterized by several techniques. Thereafter, under the ultimate green conditions, the performance of the bis-DIL was examined for the sono-synthesis of a new library of bis-2-amino-5-arylidenethiazol-4-ones via one-pot pseudo-five-component Knoevenagel condensation reaction of appropriate dialdehydes, rhodanine and amines. This protocol is tolerant towards several mono- and dialdehydes, excellently high yielding and affording access to the desired products in a single step within a short reaction time.

A new series of highly-functionalized spiro compounds of pyrrole were synthesized by a one pot, step-economic condensation of isatin, arylamine and β-keto ester catalyzed by wet picric acid. Initially, the reaction was proposed with an expectation of the formation of a multi-spiro heterocyclic framework of highly-substituted piperidine. However, the isomeric compound was characterized to be a five-membered pyrrole derivative with a diverse scope of variations having different types of substituents in the three components respectively.

The pseudo-five-component reaction between β-dicarbonyl compounds (2 molecules), diamines and α-iodoketones (2 molecules), prepared in situ from aryl ketones, was performed efficiently under mechanochemical conditions involving high-speed vibration milling with a single zirconium oxide ball. This reaction afforded symmetrical frameworks containing two pyrrole or fused pyrrole units joined by a spacer, which are of interest in the exploration of chemical space for drug discovery purposes. The method was also extended to the synthesis of one compound containing three identical pyrrole fragments via a pseudo-seven-component reaction.
