This paper reviews the progress made recently in synthesis and applications of spherical silica micro/nanomaterials with multilevel (hierarchical) structures. The spherical silica micro/nanomaterials with hierarchical structures are classified into four main structural categories that include (1) hollow mesoporous spheres, (2) core-in-(hollow porous shell) spheres, (3) hollow spheres with multiple porous shells and (4) hierarchically porous spheres. Due to the complex structures and being focused on spherical silica micro/nanomaterials, some novel methods based on the combination of two routine methods or two surfactants, and some special synthetic strategies are proposed to produce the spherical silica micro/nanomaterials with hierarchical structures. Compared with the same-sized solid, porous or hollow silica spheres, these fantastic spherical silica micro/nanomaterials with hierarchical structures exhibit enhanced properties which may enable them to be used in broad and promising applications as ideal scaffolds (carriers) for biological, medical, and catalytic applications.

Gold nanoparticles are widely used in biomedical applications due to their unique properties. However, traditional synthesis methods generate contaminants that cause cytotoxicity and compromise the biocompatibility of the nanomaterials. Therefore, green synthesis methods are essential to produce pure and biocompatible nanoparticles, ensuring their effectiveness in biomedical applications.

Traditional drug-delivery methods are limited by low bioavailability and nonspecific drug distribution, resulting in poor therapeutic efficacy and potential risks of toxicity. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have attracted wide attention as drug-delivery carriers due to their large specific surface area, adjustable pore size, good mechanical strength, good biocompatibility, and rich hydroxyl groups on their surface. In this paper, MSNs were synthesized by a template method, and the morphology and pore structure were regulated.

This work involves the preparation of dual surrogate-imprinted polymers (D-MIPs) for the capture of SARS-CoV-2. To achieve this goal, an innovative and novel dual imprinting approach using carboxylated-polystyrene (PS-COOH) nanoparticles with a diameter of 100 nm and a SARS-CoV-2 Spike-derived peptide was carried out at the surface of amine-functionalized silica (PS-NH) microspheres with a diameter of 500 nm. Firstly, PS-COOH nanoparticles with the same size and spherical shape as the SARS-CoV-2 virus were employed to form hemispherical indentations (HI) at the surface of the PS-NH microspheres (obtaining dummy particle-imprinted polymers, HI-MIPs).

Reducing the time required for the detection of bacteria in blood samples is a critical area of investigation in the field of clinical diagnosis. Positive blood culture samples often require a plate culture stage due to the interference of blood cells and proteins, which can result in significant delays before the isolation of single colonies suitable for matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) analysis. In this study, we developed a non-specific enrichment strategy based on SiO-encapsulated FeO nanoparticles combined with MALDI-TOF MS for direct identification of bacteria from aqueous environments or positive blood culture samples.

The red imported fire ants (RIFAs) are a globally important invasive pest that severely affects the ecosystem and human health, and its current control is primarily through chemical pesticides. However, the extensive use of chemical pesticides causes environmental problems, and alternative strategies for controlling this pest are being explored. In our study, we aimed to design a deep eutectic solvent (DES)-CaCO system in which RIFAs were used as target insects to increase the lethal activity and behavioural regulation effects on RIFAs via contact and feeding.
