Published: December 2011

A term newborn girl was examined directly post partum. Between the vulval fourchette (frenulum labiorum pudendi) and the anterior side of the anus a perineal defect was noticed, known as a perineal groove. This is a congenital wet sulcus, lined with mucous membrane. Surgical correction is not necessary, but it may be an option for cosmetic reasons.

Purpose: To analyze the frequency and predictive factors of the development of postoperative pectus excavatum and scoliosis in children who underwent surgery for cystic lung disease.

Methods: This study examined patients who underwent surgery for cystic lung disease (open and thoracoscopic) between July 2000 and December 2018 with a > 3-year follow-up period. Lesion size, surgical outcomes, and subsequent musculoskeletal complications were compared between the open surgery and thoracoscopic surgery groups.

Methods: Between 2010 and 2023, twenty-seven newborns out of 43,815 delivered at our institution were diagnosed with encephaloceles, including seven cases of giant encephalocele associated with Chiari malformation type III.

Neonatal sepsis, a severe infection in newborns, remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among preterm infants. This study aimed to investigate the distribution of pathogens responsible for early-onset sepsis (EOS) and late-onset sepsis (LOS), the annual variability of pathogens responsible for each type of infection, and potential trends in their profiles in preterm infants from a tertiary care neonatal intensive care unit over a ten-year period. We analyzed 177 episodes of confirmed bloodstream infection between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2023.

Physiological basis of non-invasive ventilation in the newborn.

Semin Perinatol

December 2024

Department of Women and Children's Health, School of Life Course Sciences, Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine, King's College London, London, United Kingdom; Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, University of Patras, Patras, Greece. Electronic address:

Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) is a form of respiratory support provided primarily to preterm born infants in an effort to avoid any endotracheal intubation or as a weaning step following invasive ventilation. In the context of the respiratory distress syndrome of the newborn, NIV could target and partially reverse specific pathophysiological phenomena, by improving alveolar recruitment and establishing adequate functional residual capacity. It can also assist in minimizing lung injury by avoiding excessive pressure delivery, which can be harmful for the developing lung.
