Stress-gradient plasticity.

Published: September 2011

A new model, stress-gradient plasticity, is presented that provides unique mechanistic insight into size-dependent phenomena in plasticity. This dislocation-based model predicts strengthening of materials when a gradient in stress acts over dislocation source-obstacle configurations. The model has a physical length scale, the spacing of dislocation obstacles, and is validated by several levels of discrete-dislocation simulations. When incorporated into a continuum viscoplastic model, predictions for bending and torsion in polycrystalline metals show excellent agreement with experiments in the initial strengthening and subsequent hardening as a function of both sample-size dependence and grain size, when the operative obstacle spacing is proportional to the grain size.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how the extraction of coal from an upper seam affects the stress distribution in the lower seam, which is important for planning roadway layouts.
  • Using ground-penetrating radar (GPR), researchers assess the stability of coal pillars and develop a theoretical model for stress around multiple goaves (excavated areas) and coal pillars.
  • Findings reveal that stress concentration decreases then increases, creating a stress gradient as depth increases, leading to recommendations for effectively laying out lower seam mining roadways based on varying distances between seams.

The Gradient Effect on Cyclic Behavior of 316L Stainless Steel in the Ultrasonic Bending Test.

Materials (Basel)

April 2024

Failure Mechanics and Engineering Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Key Laboratory of Sichuan Province, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610207, China.

Nanoindentation measurements were conducted to investigate the high-cycle response of 316L stainless steel in bending fatigue. Hardness variation owing to the gradient flexure stress amplitude for different curvatures was plotted along with the thickness and length, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was subsequently conducted to explore the deformation characteristics in multiple layers, which had cyclic gradient stress, on the cross-section of specimens.

College of Marine Life Sciences & Institute of Evolution and Marine Biodiversity, Ocean University of China, Qingdao 266003, China; MoE Key Laboratory of Evolution and Marine Biodiversity, Ocean University of China, Qingdao 266003, China. Electronic address:

Prometryn has been extensively detected in marine environment because of its widespread usage in agriculture and aquaculture and has been concerns since its serious effects on aquatic organisms. However, its impact on the microbial community in the marine ecosystem including seawater and biofilm is still unclear. Therefore, a short-term indoor microcosm experiment of prometryn exposure was conducted.

Elevational gradients offer special opportunities to investigate the relative role of intraspecific and interspecific trait variations in relation to stress gradients. We used an altitudinal gradient in the Mediterranean (Mt Velino, Central Italy) to study (1) how community-weighted means (CWM) and nonweighted means (CM) vary with elevation for plant height, specific leaf area, and seed mass; and (2) how variation patterns differ for inter- and intraspecific functional variability. We tested (1) if elevation influences community functional composition on the basis of the adaptive value of plant traits and (2) if the latter shows intraspecific variations according to the species' ability to cope with local conditions.
