Contaminated sediments may have wide-ranging impacts on human and ecological health. A series of in situ caged exposure studies using juvenile Chinook salmon was conducted in the Lower Duwamish Waterway (LDW). Chemical analysis of sediment, water, and fish tissue were completed. Additionally, in 2004, DNA adducts in hepatic and gill tissues were measured. Gills contained significantly higher DNA adducts at stations B2 and B4, prompting further analysis of gills in 2006 and 2007. Fluorescent aromatic compounds (FACs) in bile, and CYP1A1 in hepatic tissue were also measured during 2006 and 2007, respectively. FACs in field-caged fish were comparable or significantly higher than wild-caught fish LDW fish and significantly higher than lab fish after only 8-10 days, demonstrating the equivalency of exposure to that of migrating salmon. Furthermore, selected biomarkers appear to be capable of detecting spikes in contamination between sampling years, emphasizing the need for multiple year data collection.

Disentangling the influences of climate change from other stressors affecting the population dynamics of aquatic species is particularly pressing for northern latitude ecosystems, where climate-driven warming is occurring faster than the global average. Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in the Yukon-Kuskokwim (YK) region occupy the northern extent of their species' range and are experiencing prolonged declines in abundance resulting in fisheries closures and impacts to the well-being of Indigenous people and local communities. These declines have been associated with physical (e.

Habitat selection theory enables inferences about species habitat choice across a range of observed population densities. However, it is relatively uncommon to use habitat selection theory in studies of habitat restoration efficacy to understand the effect of restoration on habitat competition. We combined observational density data and resource selection functions to analyze habitat correlations with both habitat selection theory and a mark-recapture experiment to show how habitat restoration can mitigate competition between species with similar habitat preferences.

Autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a common monogenic disease characterized by the formation of fluid-filled renal cysts, loss of mitochondrial function, decreased fatty acid oxidation, increased glycolysis, and likely renal failure. We previously demonstrated that inducing a state of ketosis ameliorates or reverses PKD progression in multiple animal models. In this study, we compare time-restricted feeding and 48-h periodic fasting regimens in both juvenile and adult Cy/+ rats.

Background: People with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at high risk for heart failure (HF) and premature death from cardiovascular (CV) causes. The FLOW (Research Study To See How Semaglutide Works Compared to Placebo in People With Type 2 Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease), which enrolled participants with T2D and CKD, demonstrated that semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, reduced the incidence of the primary composite outcome (persistent ≥50% decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate, persistent estimated glomerular filtration rate <15 mL/min/1.73 m, kidney replacement therapy, and kidney or CV death) by 24%.
