Reciprocal interactions between wakefulness and sleep substantially influence human brain function in both states of vigilance. On the one hand, there is evidence that regionally-specialized brain activity during wakefulness is modulated by the interaction between a local use-dependent buildup of homeostatic sleep pressure and circadian signals. On the other hand, brain activity during sleep, although mainly constrained by genuine sleep oscillations, shows wake-dependent regionally-specific modulations, which are involved in the dissipation of local homeostatic sleep pressure and memory consolidation.

l-theanine: From tea leaf to trending supplement - does the science match the hype for brain health and relaxation?

Nutr Res

January 2025

Department of Molecular Medicine, University of Padova, Padova, Italy; IMDEA-Food, Madrid, Spain. Electronic address:

l-Theanine is a unique non-protein amino acid found abundantly in tea leaves. Interest in its potential use as a dietary supplement has surged recently, especially claims related to promoting relaxation and cognitive enhancement. This review surveys the chemistry, metabolism, and purported biological activities of l-theanine.

External delay and dispersion correction of automatically sampled arterial blood with dual flow rates.

Biomed Phys Eng Express

Brain Health Imaging Centre, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, B68-250 College St, Toronto, Ontario, M5T 1R8, CANADA.

Objective: Arterial sampling for PET imaging often involves continuously measuring the radiotracer activity concentration in blood using an automatic blood sampling system (ABSS). We proposed and validated an external delay and dispersion correction procedure needed when a change in flow rate occurs during data acquisition. We also measured the external dispersion constant of [11C]CURB, [18F]FDG, [18F]FEPPA, and [18F]SynVesT-1.

The roles of STAT1, CASP8, and MYD88 in the care of ischemic stroke.

Medicine (Baltimore)

January 2025

Nerve Rehabilitation Center, Beijing Rehabilitation Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University, Xixia Zhuang, Badachu, Shijingshan District, Beijing, China.

Ischemic stroke is caused by blockage of blood vessels in brain, affecting normal function. The roles of Signal Transformer and Activator of Transcription 1 (STAT1), CASP8, and MYD88 in ischemic stroke and its care are unclear. The ischemic stroke datasets GSE16561 and GSE180470 were found from the Gene Expression Omnibus database.

We examine the efficacy of the Individualized Coordination and Empowerment for Care Partners of Persons with Dementia (ICECaP), an intervention that involves one-on-one individualized support from a dementia care coordinator for a dementia care partner, compared to an active control group. At least once monthly contact is made from a dementia care coordinator to the dementia care partner by telephone, video conferencing, email, or in-person support at clinical visits for the person with dementia. In this pilot randomized unblinded control trial of ICECaP, n = 61 (n = 90 randomized) care partners completed 12-months of the ICECaP intervention and n = 69 (n = 92 randomized) care partners received routine clinical support (controls) in an outpatient memory care clinic at an academic medical center, from which the participants were recruited.

Altered neural signaling in fibromyalgia syndrome (FM) was investigated with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We employed a novel fMRI network analysis method, Structural and Physiological Modeling (SAPM), which provides more detailed information than previous methods. The study involved brain fMRI data from participants with FM (N = 22) and a control group (HC, N = 18), acquired during a noxious stimulation paradigm.
