The kidneys play a central role in regulating water, ion composition and excretion of metabolic waste products in the urine. Cuscuta chinensis has been known as an important traditional Oriental medicine for the treatment of liver and kidney disorders. Thus, we studied whether an aqueous extract of Cuscuta chinensis (ACC) seeds has an effect on renal function parameters in ischemia/reperfusion-induced acute renal failure (ARF) rats. Administration of 250 mg/kg/day ACC showed that renal functional parameters including urinary excretion rate, osmolality, Na(+), K(+), Cl(-), creatinine clearance, solute-free water reabsorption were significantly recovered in ischemia/reperfusion-induced ARF. Periodic acid Schiff staining showed that administration of ACC improved tubular damage in ischemia/reperfusion-induced ARF. In immunoblot and immunohistological examinations, ischemia/reperfusion-induced ARF decreased the expressions of water channel AQP 2, 3 and sodium potassium pump Na,K-ATPase in the renal medulla. However, administration of ACC markedly incremented AQP 2, 3 and Na,K-ATPase expressions. Therefore, these data indicate that administration of ACC ameliorates regulation of the urine concentration and renal functions in rats with ischemia/reperfusion-induced ARF.

Article Synopsis
  • Renal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury is a significant cause of acute renal failure, and the study investigates the effects of Geumgwe-sinkihwan (GSH), a traditional Chinese medicine, on a mouse model of this condition.
  • The experiment involved administering different doses of GSH to mice after inducing I/R injury through surgical clamping of renal arteries, revealing that GSH improves kidney function and reduces markers of renal injury.
  • The results showed that GSH decreases inflammatory cytokines and inflammasome-related proteins, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic agent to mitigate renal damage and inflammation in cases of acute renal failure.

Joa-gui em (, JGE) is known to be effective for treating kidney-yin deficient syndrome. However, there is a lack of objective pharmacological research on improving kidney function. This study was designed to evaluate whether JGE improves renal function and related mechanisms in rats with acute renal injury induced by ischemia/reperfusion (I/R).

Background: Cyclooxygenase (COX)-lipooxygenase (LOX) pathway plays a key role in the pathogenesis of renal ischemia/reperfusion (IR).

Objective: This study was aimed to evaluate the role of dietary phenol caffeic acid (CA), alone and in combination with selective COX-2 inhibitor celecoxib (CEL) in IR-induced acute renal failure (ARF) in rats.

Materials And Methods: Renal IR was induced by bilateral occlusion of renal pedicels for 90 min followed by reperfusion for 24 h.

In the present study, we investigated possible involvement of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDAR) in estradiol mediated protection against ischemia reperfusion (I/R)-induced acute renal failure (ARF) in rats. Bilateral renal ischemia of 40 min followed by reperfusion for 24 h induced ARF in male wistar rats. Quantification of serum creatinine, creatinine clearance (CrCl), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), uric acid, potassium, fractional excretion of sodium (Fe), and urinary microproteins was done to assess I/R-induced renal damage in rats.

Renal ischemia-reperfusion (IR) contributes to the development of acute renal failure (ARF). Oxygen free radicals are considered to be principal components involved in the pathophysiological tissue alterations observed during renal IR. The purpose of this study was to investigate the combination effect of melatonin (MEL) and erythropoietin (EPO), which are a potent antioxidant and anti-apoptotic agents, in IR-induced renal injury in rats.
