The Eastern Mediterranean region, a vital conduit for global maritime trade, faces significant environmental challenges due to marine pollution, particularly from oil spills. This is the first study covering the long period of comprehensive monitoring of oil pollution using the full mission of Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data in the Mediterranean Sea, so this research aims to detect and analyze comprehensively the occurrence of oil spills in the Eastern Mediterranean over a decade (2014-2023). This study focuses on identifying geographical distribution patterns, proximity to shorelines, frequency across maritime zones, and potential sources of these spills, especially around major ports and maritime routes.

With the development of deep learning, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) ship detection and recognition based on deep learning have gained widespread application and advancement. However, there are still challenging issues, manifesting in two primary facets: firstly, the imaging mechanism of SAR results in significant noise interference, making it difficult to separate background noise from ship target features in complex backgrounds such as ports and urban areas; secondly, the heterogeneous scales of ship target features result in the susceptibility of smaller targets to information loss, rendering them elusive to detection. In this article, we propose a context-aware one-stage ship detection network that exhibits heightened sensitivity to scale variations and robust resistance to noise interference.

The setting of Sulfur limitations in Emission Control Areas (ECAs) is a crucial action of marine environmental governance at the international regulatory levels. In this study, the overall and structural impacts of the two rounds of ECA policies on SOx concentrations were quantified using synthetic control method (SCM) based on time-series data from Chinese coastal ports from 2005 to 2020. From the outcomes, the 1st round of ECA policy announced in 2015 intensified the competition between ECA and non-ECA ports and provided strong support for ECA expansion and enhanced regulation in 2019.

Integrated frequency routers, which can guide light with different frequencies to different output ports, are an important kind of nanophotonic device. However, frequency routers with both a compact size and multiple channels are difficult to realize, which limits the application of these frequency routers in nanophotonics. Here, a kind of bandgap optimization algorithm, which consists of the finite element method and topology optimization, is proposed to design a multi-channel frequency router.
