Published: August 2011

Laser radiation provides a means to control the fields of temperature and thermo mechanical stress, mass transfer, and modification of fine structure of the cartilage matrix. The aim of this outlook paper is to review physical and biological aspects of laser-induced regeneration of cartilage and to discuss the possibilities and prospects of its clinical applications. The problems and the pathways of tissue regeneration, the types and features of cartilage will be introduced first. Then we will review various actual and prospective approaches for cartilage repair; consider possible mechanisms of laser-induced regeneration. Finally, we present the results in laser regeneration of joints and spine disks cartilages and discuss some future applications of lasers in regenerative medicine.

Background: Ceramic endosseous implant coatings have gained esteem due to their favorable osteoinductive and osteoconductive properties. However, such a layer may be prone to failure under in vivo conditions, which necessitates its modification.

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to modify an electrodeposited hydroxyapatite (HA) coating on titanium (Ti) with ultrashort-pulsed lasers for the incorporation of the ceramic into the sample surface and the texturing of the metal surface.

Article Synopsis
  • The rise of electric vehicles has led to challenges in managing the environmental impact and waste of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) once they reach the end of their life.
  • Traditional recycling methods are energy-intensive and use many resources, making them less sustainable.
  • A new laser-assisted method for regenerating spent LiMnO cathodes enhances performance through Ni doping and shows improved capacity retention, highlighting a promising solution for recycling and advancing battery technology.

Electrochemical imaging enables an in-depth analysis of the interface heterogeneity and reaction kinetics of single entities. However, electrode passivation during electrochemical reactions decreases the active sites and harms the long-term stability. Here, we introduce a method using laser-induced photothermal effects to restore the electrochemical activity, which is particularly displayed as enhanced micrometric patterns in electrochemiluminescence (ECL) microscopy.

People with injuries to the peripheral nervous system suffer from paralysis of the facial muscles, fingers and hands or toes and feet, often for the rest of their lives, due to its poor functional regeneration. Therefore, to improve patients' quality of life, there is an urgent need for conduits that effectively support the healing of large defects in nerve pathways through specific guidance of nerve cells. This paper describes two specific methods for achieving directed growth of Schwann cells, a type of glial cells that can support the regeneration of the nerve pathway by guiding the neuronal axons in the direction of their alignment.

Dental and orthopedic implants have become routine medical technologies for tooth replacement and bone fixation. Despite significant progress in implantology, achieving sufficient osseointegration remains a challenge, often leading to implant failure over the long term. Nanotechnology offers the potential to mimic the natural patterns of living tissues, providing a promising platform for tissue engineering and implant surface design.
