Trends in Total Antioxidant Status and Other Biochemical Parameters in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Case-control Study.

Curr Diabetes Rev

January 2025

Dept. of Pathology Proficiency Healthcare Diagnostics Laboratory, Al Ain, 97751, United Arab Emirates.

Objectives: Owing to the existing evidence of the implication of oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), the present study aims to investigate the correlation of serum total antioxidant status (TAS) with comorbidities, various biochemical parameters, and duration of T2DM. Various factors contributing to disease prevalence and trends in other biochemical parameters are assessed.

Methods: A retrospective observational study of 246 patients with T2DM whose data were retrieved from the Proficiency Health Diagnostic Lab System in Al Ain.

Objectives: The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening of adults aged 35-70 with a body mass index ≥25 kg/m for type 2 diabetes and referral of individuals who screen positive for pre-diabetes to evidence-based prevention strategies. The diabetes burden in the USA is predicted to triple by 2060 necessitating strategic diabetes prevention efforts, particularly in areas of highest need. This study aimed to identify pre-diabetes hotspots using geospatial mapping to inform targeted diabetes prevention strategies.

Triglyceride-glucose index: carotid intima-media thickness and cardiovascular risk in a European population.

Cardiovasc Diabetol

January 2025

Centro E. Grossi Paoletti, Dipartimento di Scienze Farmacologiche e Biomolecolari "Rodolfo Paoletti", Università degli Studi di Milano, Milano, Italy.

Background: The triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is now widely recognized as a marker of insulin resistance and has been linked to the development and prognosis of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD) in numerous populations, particularly in the Eastern world. Although there are fewer reports from the Western world, and they are sometimes contradictory, the absence of definitive data on the relationship between a raised TyG index and cardiovascular risk suggested the opportunity of testing this biochemical marker against a well-established vascular marker such as the carotid intima media thickness (c-IMT).

Methods: Primary prevention patients were selected from a cohort of individuals who underwent c-IMT measurement between 1984 and 2018 at the Dyslipidemia Center at the ASST Grande Ospedale Metropolitano Niguarda in Milan, Italy.

Background And Aims: Obesity represents a crucial modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular complications. Two dietary approaches, Very Low-Calorie Ketogenic (VLCKD) and Intermittent Fasting (IFD) diets, have demonstrated to reduce blood pressure (BP) and produce cardiovascular and metabolic advantages. We aimed to evaluate the effects of VLCKD or IFD compared to Free Diet (FD) on office brachial and central systolic BP levels.

Aims: This study aimed to delineate the effect of hyperglycemia on the Alu/LINE-1 hypomethylation and in ERK1/2 genes expression in type 2 diabetes with and without cataract.

Methods: This study included 58 diabetic patients without cataracts, 50 diabetic patients with cataracts, and 36 healthy controls. After DNA extraction and bisulfite treatment, LINE-1 and Alu methylation levels were assessed using Real-time MSP.
