The latest breakthroughs in information technology and biotechnology have catalyzed a revolutionary shift within the modern healthcare landscape, with notable impacts from artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning (DL). Particularly noteworthy is the adept application of large language models (LLMs), which enable seamless and efficient communication between scientific researchers and AI systems. These models capitalize on neural network (NN) architectures that demonstrate proficiency in natural language processing, thereby enhancing interactions.

Background: Small extracellular vesicles (sEV) released by tumor cells (tumor-derived sEV; TEX) mediate intercellular communication between tumor and non-malignant cells and were shown to impact disease progression. This study investigates the relationship between the expression levels of the vesiculation-related genes linked to sEV production and the tumor microenvironment (TME).

Methods: Two independent gene sets were analyzed, both previously linked to sEV production in various non-malignant or malignant cells.

Oral delivery of dihydroartemisinin for the treatment of melanoma via bovine milk exosomes.

Drug Deliv Transl Res

January 2025

Department of Pharmaceutical Engineering and Technology, Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi, 221005, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Cancer, particularly skin cancer, is a major cause of mortality worldwide, with melanoma being one of the most aggressive and challenging to treat types. Current therapeutic options, such as dacarbazine (DTIC), have limitations due to dose-related toxicities like liver toxicity. Therefore, there is a need for new and effective treatments for melanoma.

A Sponsor's Best Practice and Operating Principles to Manage Data Monitoring Committees.

January 2025

Global Patient Safety, Novo Nordisk A/S, Copenhagen, Søborg, 2860, Denmark.

The use of data monitoring committees (DMC) to safeguard patients' safety in clinical trials has evolved over the last decades and has become increasingly common. To ensure well-operating and high-performing DMCs, pharmaceutical companies need to establish clearly defined operational processes while continuously seeking to optimize these and adapt to the needs of drug development. Although there are health authority guidelines on establishing and managing a DMC, the perspectives and experiences of sponsors are often underrepresented.

Barriers and enablers to opioid deprescription: A qualitative study.

PLoS One

January 2025

Primary Healthcare Research Unit, Memorial University, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

Background: Canada has the fourth highest per capita rate of opioid prescriptions in the world, contributing to the country's opioid crisis. Due to both their pain-relieving and euphoric properties, opioids can be highly addictive, leading to potential overdose and death. Deprescription is an endorsed and organized method of discontinuing a drug but very little is known about the barriers that Canadian physicians face when attempting to deprescribe opioids, particularly those who practice in rural areas (which have some of the highest rates of opioid users).
