An efficient method for the synthesis of copillar[5]arenes was developed with FeCl(3) as catalyst and different 1,4-dialkoxybenzenes and paraformaldehyde as reactants (yields: 50-85%). The host-guest property of (co)pillar[5]arenes and terminal dibromoalkanes was investigated by (1)H NMR measurements and an X-ray study. The complexation behavior of the copillar[5]arenes can be tuned by changing the substituents on the host. A complete complexation selectivity was found between pillar[5]- and pillar[6]arenes, which is an interesting aspect for sensor techniques.

Herein, we report the synthesis of copillar[5]arene-based pyrene Schiff base 1 and its characterization by using 1H, 13C NMR, FT-IR and mass spectrometry. UV-vis absorption, steady-state fluorescence and time-resolved fluorescence are done to elucidate the photophysical behaviors of 1. To understand the electronic structure of 1, density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed.

The synthesis, characterization, and application of a new cyanostyrylcopillar[5]arene is reported. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and other spectroscopic techniques confirm the identity of the new copillar . The X-ray diffraction study reveals that the copillar exhibits a 1D supramolecular chain in the solid state involving π···π interactions along the crystallographic -axis and 1D chains are further connected by interchain C-H···π interactions to establish 2D supramolecular layers within the crystallographic -plane.

In this study, novel copillar[4+1]arenes were used as central heteromultivalent scaffolds via orthogonal couplings with a series of biologically relevant molecules such as carbohydrates, α-amino acids, biotin and phenylboronic acid. Further modifications by introducing maleimides or cyclooctyne groups provided molecular probes adapted to copper-free click chemistry. An octa-azidated fluorescent rotaxane bearing two distinct ligands was also generated in a fully controlled manner.

We herein report the preparation of constitutional isomers of brominated-functionalized pillar[5]arenes co-condensation of 1,4-bis(2-bromoethoxy)benzene and 1,4-dimethoxybenzene. The structures of the obtained isomers were then established using single crystal X-ray diffraction. We also found that the isomeric yield distribution of the different constitutional isomers was independent of the monomer's mole feed ratio, as revealed by HPLC analysis of the crude mixture.

Supramolecular hyperbranched polymers not only possess the polymeric properties of hyperbranched polymers but also obtain additional stimuli-responsiveness due to the dynamic properties of non-covalent interactions. Herein, a novel supramolecular hyperbranched polymer constructed by an AB -type copillar[5]arene is reported. NMR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and viscosity experiments are utilized to characterize the self-aggregate process of the AB monomers.
