Leptin, NK cells, and the weight of immunity: Insights into obesity.

Int Immunopharmacol

January 2025

Immunology Laboratory of Infectious Diseases, Department of Cellular and Molecular Biology, Federal University of Paraiba, João Pessoa, Paraíba 58051-900, Brazil. Electronic address:

Obesity is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects more than 1 billion people worldwide and is associated with various metabolic and physiological dysfunctions, directly impacting the dynamics of the immune response, partly due to elevated leptin levels. Leptin is an important peptide hormone that regulates neuroendocrine function and energy homeostasis, with its blood levels reflecting energy reserves, fat mass, or energy deprivation. This hormone also plays a fundamental role in regulating immune function, including the activity of NK cells, which are essential components in antiviral and antitumor activity.

Background: The Accelerating Medicines Partnership in Alzheimer's Disease (AMP-AD) is a public-private partnership linking NIH, the FDA, pharmaceutical companies, and nonprofit organizations in an interactive, collaborative program utilizing transcriptomics, genomics, metagenomics, proteomics, and metabolomics to provide data for computational analysis, that, in turn, enables promising targets to be ranked by a combination of omic scores and druggability. This ranking informs the selection of targets for validation.

Method: Human postmortem samples were obtained from Mount Sinai, ROSMAP (Religious Orders Study and Rush Memory and Aging Project), Mayo Clinic (Florida), and Columbia University.

To investigate the potential association between body mass index (BMI) and the clinicopathological features of patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). We retrospectively analyzed data from 2541 patients who underwent partial or radical nephrectomy for renal masses between 2013 and 2023 in a single institution. Patients were divided into normal-weight, overweight, and obese groups based on the Chinese BMI classification.

The anatomical reorganization required for C photosynthesis should also impact plant hydraulics. Most C plants possess large bundle sheath cells and high vein density, which should also lead to higher leaf capacitance and hydraulic conductance (K). Paradoxically, the C pathway reduces water demand and increases water use efficiency, creating a potential mismatch between supply capacity and demand in C plant water relations.

Objectives: The relationship between elevated ferritin levels and metabolic abnormalities in PCOS patients, and whether ferritin is a cause or a consequence, is still debated. This study aimed to evaluate the impacts of the fourth generation combined oral contraceptive containing ethinyl estradiol/drospirenone (EE 30 mcg/DRSP 3 mg), known for its favorable metabolic profile and lower side effect risk, on iron metabolism in PCOS patients, while also exploring the potential relationship between metabolic parameters and iron status.

Methods: The retrospective analysis was conducted on 81 women aged 18-45, diagnosed with PCOS according to the Rotterdam criteria and treated with EE/DRSP for six months.
