Objective: To assess sperm caspase-9 activity in infertile oligoasthenoteratozoospermic (OAT) men with and without varicocele.

Design: Prospective.

Setting: Academic setting.

Patient(s): Eighty men: healthy fertile control subjects (n = 20), OAT (n = 25), and OAT associated with left-side varicocele (n = 35).

Intervention(s): History taking, clinical examination, semen analysis, assessment of seminal caspase-9.

Main Outcome Measure(s): Semen analysis, sperm caspase-9.

Result(s): Sperm caspase-9 was significantly increased in infertile OAT men associated with varicocele compared with OAT men without varicocele and healthy fertile control subjects. Sperm casapse-9 activity demonstrated significant negative correlation with sperm count, sperm motility, sperm velocity, sperm linear velocity, sperm linearity index, and sperm normal morphology.

Conclusion(s): Sperm caspase-9 is exaggerated in infertile OAT cases with varicocele compared with infertile OAT cases without varicocele or healthy fertile men. Sperm caspase-9 demonstrated significant negative correlation with semen variables.

Objective: To observe the effects of the "Zhibian" (BL54)-toward-"Shuidao" (ST28) acupuncture on key regulatory factors during mitochondrial apoptosis of testicular tissue in asthenozoospermia mice, and explore the potential mechanism of the protective effect of acupuncture on reproductive function.

Methods: Thirty C57BL/6 male mice were randomly divided into a blank group, a model group and an acupuncture group, 10 mice in each group. In the model and the acupuncture groups, the intraperitoneal injection of cyclophosphamide (30 mg•kg•d) was delivered for 7 days to prepare the asthenozoospermia model.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a contaminant widely found in food packaging that can reduce sperm quality and impair male fertility. Zinc (Zn) is an important antioxidant involved in many important biological functions. The aim of this study was to explore the protective effect and mechanism of Zn on reproductive toxicity induced by BPA.

Terpenoids, the largest class of natural products, have been demonstrated to confer antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and antitumor activities. However, whether terpenoids benefit populations exposed to nanomaterials through these mechanisms remains unclear. This meta-analysis was to evaluate the effects of terpenoids in preclinical models with nanomaterial exposure.

Article Synopsis
  • Diabetes negatively affects male fertility by altering testicular structure and hormone levels.
  • A study using artichoke extract and probiotics on diabetic rats showed significant improvements in sexual hormones, oxidative stress markers, and overall testicular health.
  • The combination treatment led to increased sperm quantity and quality, indicating potential for future infertility therapies in diabetic men.

Background: Cryptorchidism, the failure of testes to descend into the scrotum, exposes the testes to higher temperature and external pressure. Scholars from Razi University found through research conducted at different pressure gradients (0, 25, 50, and 100 mmHg) and time gradients (2 and 4 h) that high hydrostatic pressure may lead to sperm apoptosis. In this work, we investigated the effect of external pressure on spermatogonia, exploring a new mechanism of male infertility caused by cryptorchidism.
