We consider here a classical model, consisting of D(2h) symmetric particles, whose centers of mass are associated with a three-dimensional simple-cubic lattice; the pair potential is isotropic in orientation space, and restricted to nearest neighbors. Two orthonormal triads define orientations of a pair of interacting particles; the simplest potential models proposed in the literature can be written as a linear combination involving the squares of the scalar products between corresponding unit vectors only, thus depending on three parameters, and making the interaction model rather versatile. A coupling constant with negative sign tends to keep the two interacting unit vectors parallel to each other, whereas a positive sign tends to keep them mutually orthogonal (antinematic coupling). We address here a special, extreme case of the above family, involving only antinematic couplings: more precisely, three antinematic terms whose coefficients are set to a common positive value (hence the name PPP model). The model under investigation produces a doubly degenerate pair ground state; the nearest-neighbor range of the interaction and the bipartite character of the lattice can propagate the pair ground state and increase the overall degeneracy, but without producing frustration. The model was investigated by a simplified molecular field treatment as well as by Monte Carlo simulation, whose results suggested a second-order transition to a low-temperature biaxially ordered phase; ground-state configurations producing orientational order have been selected by thermal fluctuations. The molecular field treatment also predicted a continuous transition, and was found to overestimate the transition temperature by a factor 2.

In this work, selenium (IV) ions were adsorbed from aqueous solutions by the strongly basic anion exchange resin Amberlite IRA-400. The morphology of the resin before and after Se(IV) sorption was investigated using different techniques such as energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). To determine the ideal sorption conditions, a batch approach was used to examine the variables affecting Se(IV) sorption performance, including pH, shaking time, adsorbent dosage, initial metal ion concentration, and temperature.

In order to study the change rule of freshness and acid ions in reconstituted tobacco slurry, the content changes of 17 organic acids and 5 inorganic anions in reconstituted tobacco slurry with different residence times under confined condition were determined by on-line solid-phase extraction ion chromatography in this study. The results showed that the changes of acetic acid, nitrate ion and isovaleric acid in different reconstituted tobacco slurries with oscillation time were regular and consistent, and the trends of the changes of acetic acid, nitrate ion and isovaleric acid in different reconstituted tobacco slurries with oscillation time were correlated with each other in a highly significant way. Taking the evaluation of olfactory aroma and sensory quality qualities of reconstituted tobacco pulps with different residence times as a benchmark, it was found that the variation patterns of nitrate ions and isovaleric acid in reconstituted tobacco pulps with oscillation time were consistent with the variation patterns of olfactory and sensory qualities in the process of closed oscillation; compared with the fresh pulp, the olfactory aroma and sensory qualities of tobacco pulps had unpleasant odours appearing when the content of nitrate ions was reduced by about 48%.

This study focuses on the synthesis of a novel Cerium-Magnesium (CeO-MgO) binary oxide nanomaterials by a simple co-precipitation process and used to remove harmful pollutants such as Cr(VI), Cu(II), and F. The morphology, phase, crystallite size, thermal stability, functional groups, surface area, and porosity of the synthesized nanomaterial were determined by using XRD, SEM, FTIR, TGA/DTA, and BET studies. The prepared nanomaterials showed adsorption selectivity of Cu(II) ≈ F> Cr(VI) with a high adsorption capacity of 84.

Among expanding discoveries of quantum phases in moiré superlattices, correlated insulators stand out as both the most stable and most commonly observed. Despite the central importance of these states in moiré physics, little is known about their underlying nature. Here, we use pump-probe spectroscopy to show distinct time-domain signatures of correlated insulators at fillings of one (ν = -1) and two (ν = -2) holes per moiré unit cell in the angle-aligned WSe/WS system.

The precise patterning of elastic semiconductors holds encouraging prospects for unlocking functionalities and broadening the scope of optoelectronic applications. Here, perovskite films with notable elasticity capable of stretching over 250% are successfully fabricated by using a continuous-wave (CW) laser-patterning technique. Under CW laser irradiation, perovskite nanoparticles (NPs) undergo meticulous crystallization within the thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) matrix, which yields the capability of an unparalleled stretch behavior.
