We have investigated the magnetic properties of CuNCN, the first nitrogen-based analog of cupric oxide CuO. Our muon-spin relaxation, nuclear magnetic resonance, and electron-spin resonance studies reveal that classical magnetic ordering is absent down to the lowest temperatures. However, a large enhancement of spin correlations and an unexpected inhomogeneous magnetism have been observed below 80 K. We attribute this to a peculiar fragility of the electronic state against weak perturbations due to geometrical frustration, which selects between competing spin-liquid and more conventional frozen states.

To analyze the mechanism of copper accumulation in the marine alga , it was cultivated with 10 μM of copper, with 10 μM of copper and increasing concentrations of a sulfide donor (NaHS) for 0 to 7 days, and with 10 μM of copper and a concentration of the sulfide acceptor (hypotaurine) for 5 days. The level of intracellular copper was determined as well as the level of glutathione (GSH) and phytochelatins (PCs) and the expression of metallothioneins (UcMTs). The level of intracellular copper in the algae treated with copper increased at day 1, slightly increased until day 5 and remained unchanged until day 7.

A novel optical lactate biosensor is presented that utilizes a colorimetric interaction between HO liberated by a binary enzymatic reaction and bis(neocuproine)copper(II) complex ([Cu(Nc)]) known as CUPRAC (cupric reducing antioxidant capacity) reagent. In the first step, lactate oxidase (LOx) and pyruvate oxidase (POx) were separately immobilized on silanized magnetite nanoparticles (SiO@FeO NPs), and thus, 2 mol of HO was released per 1 mol of the substrate due to a sequential enzymatic reaction of the mixture of LOx-SiO@FeO and POx-SiO@FeO NPs with lactate and pyruvate, respectively. In the second step, the absorbance at 450 nm of the yellow-orange [Cu(Nc)] complex formed through the color reaction of enzymatically produced HO with [Cu(Nc)] was recorded.
