Based on three case studies it is demonstrated that the application of mathematical models in biological wastewater treatment has not yet reached its full potential. Model structure uncertainty and correlation of uncertain parameter values make up the first case. The combination of biokinetic and hydraulic models relates to the second case. The evolution of a full scale plant over its life expectancy is the frame for the third case. This paper was initially presented as a discussion starter and thus is raising questions rather than providing answers.

Ensuring everyone enjoys healthy lifestyles and well-being at all ages, Progress has been made in increasing access to clean water and sanitation facilities and reducing the spread of epidemics and diseases. The synthesis of nano-particles (NPs) by using microalgae is a new nanobiotechnology due to the use of the biomolecular (corona) of microalgae as a capping and reducing agent for NP creation. This investigation explores the capacity of a distinct indigenous microalgal strain to synthesize silver nano-particles (AgNPs), as well as its effectiveness against multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria and its ability to degrade Azo dye (Methyl Red) in wastewater.

Microbial loss significantly affects wastewater treatment efficiency. This study simulated the inoculation area of a self-developed biological doubling reactor (BDR) to evaluate the retention efficiency of seven different fillers for aerobic denitrifying bacteria. Over 90 days of continuous operation, the porous filler R3 demonstrated excellent performance, with OD values consistently exceeding 1.

The environmental persistence of pharmaceuticals represents a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems and human health, while limitations in conventional wastewater treatment methods underscore the urgent need for innovative and eco-friendly degradation strategies. Photobiocatalytic approaches provide a promising solution for the effective degradation of pharmaceutical contaminants by harnessing the synergistic effects of both photocatalysts and biocatalysts. In this study, we developed a photobiocatalytic composite by co-immobilizing laccase enzyme and zinc oxide nanoparticles on bacterial cellulose synthesized from orange peel waste.

Background: Enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) systems utilize phosphorus-accumulating organisms (PAOs) to remove phosphorus from wastewater since excessive phosphorus in water bodies can lead to eutrophication. This study aimed to characterize a newly isolated PAO strain for its potential application in EBPR systems and to screen for additional biotechnological potential. Here, sequencing allowed for genomic analysis, identifying the genes and molecules involved, and exploring other potentials.

Background: () is the most prominent bacterial pathogen that causes urinary tract infections (UTIs), and the rate of resistance to most used antibiotics is alarmingly increasing.
Methods: This study assessed the hostel gutters of two Nigerian universities, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and Kogi State University, Anyigba (KSU), for and its antimicrobial resistance genes (). Oxoid Chromogenic UTI agar was used to isolate uropathogenic (UPEC), identified using standard biochemical tests.
