This paper reports a large-scale synthesis of ZnO balls made of fluffy thin ZnO nanosheets by simple solution process at low-temperature of 65±2°C. The synthesized ZnO structures were characterized in detail in terms of their morphological, structural, optical and photocatalytic properties. The detailed morphological characterizations, done by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), confirmed that the synthesized products are ZnO balls which are made by accumulation of hundreds of thin ZnO nanosheets. Interestingly, it is seen that the nanosheets are arranged in such a special fashion that they made ball-like morphologies. Detailed structural examinations revealed that of as-synthesized ZnO products are well-crystalline and possessing wurtzite hexagonal phase. The optical property, measured by UV-Visible spectroscopy, substantiated good optical properties for as-synthesized ZnO balls. The as-synthesized ZnO balls were utilized as an efficient photocatalysts for the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye. Almost complete degradation of MB was observed in presence of ZnO balls composed of nanosheets within 70 min under UV-light irradiation. By comparing the photocatalytic performance with commercially available TiO(2)-UV-100, it was observed that the synthesized ZnO balls exhibited superior photocatalytic performance as compared to TiO(2)-UV-100 photocatalyst.

A novel photochromic heteropolyacid-based composite film consisting of phosphomolybdic acid (PMoA), ZnO, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was fabricated by a sol-gel process. The microstructure and photochromic properties of the PMoA/ZnO/PVP were characterized via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis). The FTIR spectra showed that the basic structures of ZnO and PVP, and the Keggin structure of PMoA in the PMoA/ZnO/PVP composite film, had not been destroyed during the preparation.

In spite of the progress achieved on the photo-catalytic treatment of water streams, there is still a gap of knowledge on the optimization of the performance of continuous-flow photo-reactors. Zinc-oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles were immobilized on Duranit (80% silica + 20% alumina) inert balls with dip-coating and thermal annealing. The immobilized ZnO nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy.

In the present study, a novel ZnO nanoparticles adorned nitrogen-doped carbon balls (ZnO@CBs) were successfully synthesized from polybenzoxazine and ZnO nanoparticles through a simple carbonization method. The typical wurtzite hexagonal zinc oxide phase in ZnO@CBs and degree of graphitization were revealed by the X-ray diffraction pattern. The field emission scanning electron microscopy confirmed that the synthesized carbon materials have well dispersed ball-like structure, wherein, the ZnO nanoparticles are distributed evenly on the carbon balls (CBs).

Here, we develop a new method to improve the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) activity of ZnO using Mg doping combined with noble metals. Highly aligned silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) decorated on an array of Mg-doped ZnO (MZO@Ag) were fabricated. Using rhodamine 6G as the probe molecule, SERS indicated that the MZO@Ag substrate possesses perfect sensitivity, homogeneity, and chemical stability.

Both pure and Mn(II)-doped ZnO hollow structures were synthesized by a solvothermal reaction, and their phase structures, morphologies and elemental composition were characterized. SEM and TEM observations show the pure ZnO and the Mn(II)-doped ZnO balls to possess similar hollow structure with a particle size of about 1.5 μm.
