Objective: To investigate possible neuroprotective effects of dietary supplementation of fish oil in brain ischemia-reperfusion (I/R).

Methods: This investigation took place in the Experimental Research Unit, Firat University, Elazig, Turkey, from January-February 2006. The study was carried out on 12 male Wistar rats; divided into 2 groups: I/R (control) and I/R + omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFA) (experiment). The rats in the I/R group received only ordinary rat food before middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion. The I/R + omega-3 EFA group received omega-3 fatty acid daily via intragastric gavage (300 mg/kg Marincap capsule) with normal food before MCA occlusion for 30 days. Structural alterations in the brain tissues were semi-quantitatively analyzed (0: absent, +: slight, ++: moderate, +++: severe).

Results: There was evident severe (+++) edema, vacuolization, and eosinophilic degeneration in the I/R group, while only slight (+) edema and eosinophilic degeneration in the I/R + omega-3 EFA group in which no vacuolization was determined. These findings are consistent with the available studies in this field.

Conclusion: Results from this study indicate the beneficial effects of omega-3 EFA supplementation in prevention of I/R - induced damage in rats.

A close correlation exists between the macrophage/microglia(MΦ/MG) polarization states and the development of cerebral ischemia and reperfusion (I/R). Therefore it is of great significance to research on how to modulate the MΦ/MG states for improved patient outcomes. In particular, regulatory mechanisms involved in this process remain to be identified.

Myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury after the onset of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) can be life-threatening, and there is no effective strategy for therapeutic intervention. Here, we studied the potential of protectin D1 in protecting from I/R-induced cardiac damages and investigated the underlying mechanisms. An in vivo rat model of I/R after AMI induction was established through the ligation of the left anterior descending (LAD) artery to assess the cardiac functions and evaluate the protective effect of protectin D1.

Objective: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is usually triggered by trauma or a surgical procedure, and it typically becomes an established one after an intense inflammatory process with chronic pain and edema as the main symptoms. Available treatments for CRPS have low efficacy. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and immunoregulatory effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) supplementation on paw edema and anti- and pro-inflammatory cytokines and macrophage phenotypes in the chronic post-ischemia pain (CPIP) preclinical model of CRPS-Type I.

Unlabelled: Some genetic factors may influence body composition, such as PPARγ and UCP2. PPARγ plays an important role in body fat distribution. The objective of the present study is to determine the effects of omega3 fatty acids on the gene expression of PPARγ and UCP2, levels of blood lipid profile, fat mass, and fat-free mass, and appetite.

Article Synopsis
  • After a heart attack, a treatment called coronary angioplasty can cause some damage to the heart, known as ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids (PUFAs) can help protect the heart, but scientists found a way to make them work better using a special compound called poly-l-glutamic acid (PGA).
  • By combining PGA with a specific omega-3 fatty acid (diDHA), it helps protect heart cells from damage and could lead to better treatments for patients after heart surgeries.
