Background/objectives: The prognostic nutritional index (PNI) and Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS) are associated with patients' nutritional and immune statuses. One important factor in the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is inflammation. Being present in insulin-target tissues, chronic tissue inflammation has become recognized as a crucial aspect of obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Kidney effects of triple CFTR modulator therapy in people with cystic fibrosis.

Clin Kidney J

October 2024

Centre de Ressource et de Compétences de la mucoviscidose, Service de médecine Interne et de Pathologie Vasculaire, Hospices Civils de Lyon, Hôpital Lyon Sud, 165 Chemin du Grand Revoyet, Pierre-Bénite, Rhône, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI) is a new treatment for cystic fibrosis that significantly improves lung health, but its effects on kidneys remain uncertain.
  • A study involving 19 adults with cystic fibrosis showed no significant change in kidney function after 7 months of ETI treatment, though there was a decrease in aldosterone levels and magnesuria.
  • The results indicate that ETI does not negatively affect renal function in the short term and may help address related issues like hyperaldosteronism; however, further research is needed to understand the implications for kidney stone risk.

Estimating glomerular filtration in young people.

Clin Kidney J

September 2024

Department of Public Health and Primary Care, KU Leuven Campus Kulak Kortrijk, Kortrijk, Belgium.

Background: Creatinine-based equations are the most used to estimate glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). The Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI), the re-expressed Lund-Malmö Revised (r-LMR) and the European Kidney Function Consortium (EKFC) equations are the most validated. The EKFC and r-LMR equations have been suggested to have better performances in young adults, but this is debated.

Comparison of estimated glomerular filtration rate using five equations to predict acute kidney injury following hip fracture surgery.

Orthop Traumatol Surg Res

December 2024

From the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Rush University, Chicago, IL, USA; From the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of California San Francisco, University Orthopaedic Associates, Fresno, CA, USA.

Background: Decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is associated with acute kidney injury (AKI) following hip fracture surgery. Delaying surgery for preoperative treatment of comorbidities is controversial in this patient population. The purpose of this study was 1) to assess differences in demographics and comorbidities between AKI and non-AKI groups, 2) to analyze equations used in calculating eGFR, and 3) to identify the equation which best predicts the development of AKI following hip fracture surgery.

Introduction: Despite a well-established direct toxic effect of alcohol on renal cells, there is a salutary dose-dependent effect of alcohol consumption on common laboratory parameters related to kidney performance. Alcohol also impacts thyroid hormones, while thyroid status modulates kidney function. The modulation of kidney parameters with thyrotropin (TSH) and thyroid status indicates a possible interaction between alcohol, kidney, and thyroid functions.
