Published: April 2012

Background: Postoperative seroma formation remains the most frequent complication after full abdominoplasty. This study aimed to evaluate postoperatively the formation of a minor seroma when the superficial fascia is used for preparation.

Methods: The study enrolled 50 patients who underwent a full abdominoplasty with umbilicus transposition between February 2008 and February 2010. The patients were alternated to the scarpa group or the rectus group.

Results: The two groups differed in terms of postoperative seroma formation and amount of average drain output.

Conclusion: Scarpa fascia preservation seems to reduce postoperative seroma formation. The mechanism of the decreased fluid collection is not clear and needs further investigation.

Background: Surgical drains are commonly used in breast surgery and breast reconstruction for seroma prevention. Although many surgeons are aware that surgical drains can cause considerable discomfort to patients, less is understood about the specific impacts of drains on postoperative pain and quality of life (QOL).

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among patients at our institution who had previously undergone mastectomy or breast reconstruction procedures to better understand patients' experiences with surgical drains.

: Although breast surgery has undergone a drastic de-escalation in recent decades, axillary dissection is still indicated in some selected cases. Unfortunately, in 3-85% of cases, complications such as seroma formation occur, highlighting the need for more accurate hemostasis systems. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of absorbable polysaccharide hemostatic such as Haemocer in preventing postoperative seroma.

Background: Breast conserving surgery (BCS) with partial breast reconstruction (PBR) results in less morbidity, better cosmetic outcomes, and improved patient satisfaction compared to mastectomy. Perforator flap reconstruction can attenuate defects prone to breast deformity after BCS. Usually, postoperative drains and inpatient admission are part of this treatment.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to evaluate operative time and postoperative complications of 4 post-training specialized surgeons.

Methods: This was a pilot retrospective chart review to determine the learning curve of a Shouldice primary inguinal hernia repair (Shouldice Repair) of 4 post-training specialized surgeons, at the Shouldice Hospital. The first 300 Shouldice Repairs (early learning block) were compared to their 900-1,000 repairs as the primary operating surgeon (late learning block).

Background: Given the increasing prevalence of antiplatelet agent use and the lack of high-quality evidence, the CAPTAIN trial aimed to investigate the safety and provide recommendations on continuing acetylsalicylic acid perioperatively in patients undergoing elective laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal inguinal hernia repair (LIHR).

Methods: The CAPTAIN trial was a multicentre, surgeon blind, randomized controlled trial conducted from April 2016 to April 2023. Patients undergoing LIHR were eligible for inclusion.
