Evidence is presented that components of fetal calf serum (FCS) can significantly enhance the splicing correction activity of peptide nucleic acids (PNA) in HeLa pLuc 705 cells. The effect proved more pronounced for PNAs bearing fluorescence tags and relies on the ability of specific components of FCS to mediate a mainly nonendocytotic intracellular delivery of PNA. Attempts to isolate and characterize the active serum components using PNA-loaded beads and nano-LC-ESI mass spectrometry revealed the growth-factor related inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor and the adhesion protein fibronectin to be substantially responsible for the delivery activity of FCS.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a gestational complication affecting 5% to 10% of all pregnancies. PE is characterized by hypertension and endothelial dysfunction, whose etiology involves, among other factors, alterations in the extracellular matrix (ECM) that can compromise vascular remodeling and trophoblast invasion, ie, processes essential for placental development. Endothelial dysfunction is caused by release of antiangiogenic factors, mainly a soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1), which antagonizes two endothelial angiogenic factors, the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and placental growth factor (PLGF).

The global issue of aging populations has become increasingly prominent, thus the research and development for anti-aging therapies to assure longevity as well as to ameliorate age-related complications is put high on the agenda. The young humoral milieu has been substantiated to impart youthful characteristics to aged cells or organs. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are a heterogeneous group of cell-derived membrane-limited structures that serve as couriers of proteins and genetic material to regulate intercellular communication.

Retroperitoneal teratomas are rare neoplasms in neonates, presenting with nonspecific symptoms and variable clinical features, making diagnosis challenging. Radiological investigations, particularly fetal ultrasound and contrast-enhanced computed tomography, play a critical role in their detection. Differential diagnoses include neuroblastoma, adrenal hemorrhage, and congenital cystic lesions, which share overlapping clinical and imaging features.

Objective: In the UK and worldwide, there are substantial ethnic inequalities in maternal and perinatal care and outcomes. We aim to assess the impact of the unprecedented change in care provision during the COVID-19 pandemic on inequalities in adverse maternity outcomes.
Design: Retrospective cohort study using structured electronic health record data.

In young children, pneumococcal meningitis epitomizes the paradigm of a destructive innate inflammatory response in the central nervous system: a five-alarm fire. In contrast, cell-free bacterial components reaching the fetal brain from an infected mother signal a quiet, noninflammatory immune response that drives abnormal neurodevelopment, changing brain architecture through neuroproliferation. This review addresses the difference between prenatal and postnatal bacterial-host signaling within the brain.
