The restoration of a blurry or noisy image is commonly performed with a MAP estimator, which maximizes a posterior probability to reconstruct a clean image from a degraded image. A MAP estimator, when used with a sparse gradient image prior, reconstructs piecewise smooth images and typically removes textures that are important for visual realism. We present an alternative deconvolution method called iterative distribution reweighting (IDR) which imposes a global constraint on gradients so that a reconstructed image should have a gradient distribution similar to a reference distribution. In natural images, a reference distribution not only varies from one image to another, but also within an image depending on texture. We estimate a reference distribution directly from an input image for each texture segment. Our algorithm is able to restore rich mid-frequency textures. A large-scale user study supports the conclusion that our algorithm improves the visual realism of reconstructed images compared to those of MAP estimators.

Solvent environment may significantly affect the equilibria involving flexible solute species, such as proteins and polymers. In the present work, a computation scheme is formulated for the change in the excess chemical potential of a flexible solute molecule upon variation of the solvent condition. The formulation adopts the scheme of error minimization in parallel to the method of Bennett acceptance ratio, and an exact expression is presented that provides the change in the excess chemical potential from solvation free energies computed in two solvent conditions of interest.

Background: Multiple diseases, such as Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS), present at adolescent age and the impact on quality of life (QoL) prolongs into adulthood. For the EQ-5D, a commonly used instrument to measure QoL, the current guideline is ambiguous whether the youth or adult version is to be preferred at adolescent age. To assess which is most suitable, this study tested for equivalence along predefined criteria of the youth (EQ-5D-5L) and adult (EQ-5D-Y-5L) version in an adolescent population receiving bracing therapy for AIS.

Average nucleotide identity (ANI) is a widely used metric to estimate genetic relatedness, especially in microbial species delineation. While ANI calculation has been well optimized for bacteria and closely related viral genomes, accurate estimation of ANI below 80%, particularly in large reference data sets, has been challenging due to a lack of accurate and scalable methods. To bridge this gap, we introduce MANIAC, an efficient computational pipeline optimized for estimating ANI and alignment fraction (AF) in viral genomes with divergence around ANI of 70%.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global health concern. One of the most important causes of AMR is the excessive and inappropriate use of antimicrobial drugs in healthcare and community settings. Most countries have policies that require antimicrobial drugs to be obtained from a pharmacy by prescription.

Background: Thin endometrial thickness (EMT) and advanced age are both common risk factors for adverse neonatal outcomes (ANOs). However, studies evaluating the impact of EMT and combined effect of EMT and age on ANOs remain scarce with conflicts.
Method: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 7,715 singleton deliveries from frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycles between 2017 and 2021.
