The mechanism of formation of ammonia borane (NH(3)BH(3), AB) and the diammoniate of diborane ([H(2)B(NH(3))(2)][BH(4)], DADB) in the reaction between NH(3) and THF·BH(3) was explored experimentally and computationally. Ammonia diborane (NH(3)BH(2)(μ-H)BH(3), AaDB), a long-sought intermediate proposed for the formation of DADB, was directly observed in the reaction using (11)B NMR spectroscopy. The results indicate that dihydrogen bonds between the initially formed AB and AaDB accelerate the formation of DADB in competition with the formation of AB.

Ammonium aminodiboranate (AADB) and diammoniate of diborane (DADB) are two isomers of ammonia borane (AB), which have been intensively studied for hydrogen storage. Their high hydrogen contents give them the high potential to serve as hydrogen storage materials. To explore their dehydrogenation pathways, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with a reactive force field (ReaxFF) were applied.

Long-sought mechanisms for the conversion of diammoniate of diborane ([NH3BH2NH3]+[BH4]-) into NH3BH3 and [NH2BH2]n as well as ammonium aminodiborane ([NH4]+[BH3NH2BH3]-) into a butane analogue, NH3BH2NH2BH3, have been elucidated on the basis of extensive experimental and theoretical studies. The [NH4]+ ammonium cation and the (η2-H2)BH2R moiety are found to be critical in B/N chain expansion.

Solid-state hydrogen rich boron-nitrogen compounds for energy storage.

Chem Soc Rev

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland, WA 99352, USA.

Boron compounds have a rich history in energy storage applications, ranging from high energy fuels for advanced aircraft to hydrogen storage materials for fuel cell applications. In this review we cover some of the aspects of energy storage materials comprised of electron-poor boron materials combined with electron-rich nitrogen elements with the goal of moderate temperature release of hydrogen. The parent compounds of ammonium borohydride, ammonia borane, and diammoniate of diborane provide approaches for storing high gravimetric and volumetric densities of hydrogen.

A New Perspective on Borane Chemistry: The Nucleophilicity of the B-H Bonding Pair Electrons.

A number of recently discovered nucleophilic boron compounds, such as boryl anions and borylenes, are breaking the rules regarding boron and boron-containing compounds and their reputation as Lewis acids/electrophiles. In a similar fashion, the B-H bonding pair electrons in boranes also show nucleophilicity which is ascribed to the lower electronegativity of boron relative to that of hydrogen. However, this nucleophilicity of the B-H bond has received far less attention.

Ammonium Aminodiboranate: A Long-Sought Isomer of Diammoniate of Diborane and Ammonia Borane Dimer.

Ammonium aminodiboranate ([NH4 ][BH3 NH2 BH3 ]) is a long-sought isomer of diammoniate of diborane ([NH3 BH2 NH3 ][BH4 ]) and ammonia borane (NH3 BH3 ) dimer. Our results show that [NH4 ][BH3 NH2 BH3 ] is stable in tetrahydrofuran at -18 °C and decomposes rapidly to NH3 BH2 NH2 BH3 and H2 at elevated temperatures. The decomposition pathway is dictated by the dihydrogen bonding between H(δ+) on NH4 (+) and H(δ-) on BH3 , as confirmed by theoretical calculations.
