Objective: To analyze relationships between serum free fatty acid (FFA) concentrations and pregnancy.

Design: Prospective cohort.

Setting: University hospital.

Patient(s): Ninety-one women undergoing IVF.

Intervention(s): Serum was analyzed for total and specific serum FFAs, including myristic, palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, and α-linolenic acids.

Main Outcome Measure(s): Univariate analyses were used to identify specific FFAs and other factors associated with pregnancy after IVF. Logistic regression was performed modeling relationships between identified factors and chance of pregnancy.

Result(s): In unadjusted analyses, women with elevated serum α-linolenic acid (ALA) levels (highest quartile) demonstrated a decreased chance of pregnancy compared with women with the lowest levels (odds ratio 0.24, 95% confidence interval 0.052-0.792). No associations between other FFAs and pregnancy were identified. In a multivariable regression model, associations between elevated serum ALA levels and decreased chance of pregnancy remained after adjusting for patient age, body mass index, and history of endometriosis or previous live birth (adjusted odds ratio 0.139, 95% confidence interval 0.028-0.686).

Conclusion(s): Elevated serum ALA levels are associated with decreased chance of pregnancy in women undergoing IVF. Further work is needed to determine whether ALA is involved in early reproductive processes and whether the relationship between ALA and pregnancy is associated with excess ALA intake, impaired ALA metabolism, or both.

Objective: To investigate the correlation between endometriosis (EMs) severity and placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) risk in the subsequent pregnancy.

Method: Clinical records of 2,142 patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery for EMs at Fujian Provincial Maternal and Child Health Hospital from January 2014 to January 2018, who had achieved pregnancy and were delivered, were analyzed. Baseline data, EMs stage, The Revised American Fertility Society (R-AFS) score, levels of serum indexes, and pregnancy and neonatal outcomes were recorded.

Background: Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) is a rare venous malformation disorder. Currently, there is no standard therapy for this disease. However, lauromacrogol, a sclerosant extensively utilized in the management of vascular malformations, has been applied in the treatment of BRBNS.

Statins-Their Effect on Lipoprotein(a) Levels.

Rev Cardiovasc Med

January 2025

Department of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine, Medical University of Warsaw, 02-097 Warsaw, Poland.

Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) serum concentration plays a crucial role as a risk factor in cardiovascular diseases and is gaining more and more attention. Patients with elevated lipoprotein(a) levels are often prescribed statins as they also have high concentrations of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Statins are drugs that successfully decrease LDL-C, but their effectiveness in Lp(a) levels reduction is uncertain.

Background: Hypertension-mediated organ damage (HMOD) is a critical complication of hypertension that can present with cardiac, retinal, and renal manifestations and affect patient outcomes. Serum signal peptide, CUB (complement C1r/C1s, Uegf, and Bmp1) domain, and epidermal growth factor-like domain-containing protein 1 (SCUBE-1), a novel biomarker implicated in vascular pathology, shows promise for detecting HMOD. This study aims to explore the relation between SCUBE-1 levels and HMOD in hypertensive patients.

Background: To explore the association between gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) and in-hospital heart failure (HF) in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

Methods: A total of 412 patients diagnosed with STEMI and treated with primary PCI were included in our study. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association between GGT and the risk of in-hospital HF in STEMI patients.
