Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is one of the main treatment methods for hematological malignancies. With the continuous improvement and popularization of transplantation technology, it has brought hope for prolonging the lives and improving the survival rate of patients with hematological malignancies. However, postoperative invasive fungal infection (IFI) is the most common infectious complication and the main cause of death, with difficult early diagnosis and extremely high mortality.

Emerging multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains are the main challenges to the progression of new drug discovery. To diminish infectious disease-causing pathogens, new antibiotics are required while the drying pipeline of potent antibiotics is adding to the severity. Plant secondary metabolites or phytochemicals including alkaloids, phenols, flavonoids, and terpenes have successfully demonstrated their inhibitory potential against the drug-resistant pathogens.

Department of Evolutionary Genetics and Biosystematics, Faculty of Biology, University of Gdansk, Gdansk, Poland.

Introduction: Facemasks were widely mandated during the recent SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Especially the use by the general population is associated with a higher risk of improper handling of the mask and contamination and potential adverse microbiological consequences.

Methods: We investigated and quantified bacterial accumulation in facemasks used by the general population, using 16S rRNA (Sanger Sequencing), culture and biochemical analysis along with Rose Bengal staining.

Hemato-oncologic children form a heterogeneous group with a wide spectrum of ages, malignancy types, and immunosuppression grades during the different phases of their treatment. Immunosuppression is caused by multiple factors, including the malignancy itself, bone marrow suppression secondary to therapy, and wide use of steroids and antibiotics, among others. At the same time, the risk of infections in these patients remains high because of prolonged hospitalizations or the need for long-timing implanted devices between other features.

Introduction: Mucormycosis is an acute onset, invasive, fungal infection, characterized by organ involvement, and caused by Mucor, Rhizopus, or Absidia. Our aim was to present a case of mucormycotic infection and emphasize its importance in a diabetic immunosuppressed patient with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

Case Presentation: A 68-year-old hypertensive and diabetic male patient with a diagnosis of AML developed respiratory failure and exhibited diffuse bilateral consolidation in high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT).
