Electroacupuncture pretreatment ameliorates Golgi stress and the inflammation response against endotoxin-induced lung injury.

Tianjin Nankai Hospital, Tianjin Medical University, Tianjin, China; Institute of Integrative Medicine for Acute Abdominal Diseases, Tianjin, China; Tianjin Key Laboratory of Acute Abdomen Disease Associated Organ Injury and ITCWM Repair, Tianjin, China. Electronic address:

Background: Sepsis is a life-threatening condition involving organ dysfunction characterized by a generalized inflammatory syndrome, and the associated mortality rate is high. Electroacupuncture (EA) exerts benefits in endotoxemia-induced lung injury, mainly through lung inflammation reduction and cellular homeostasis, although the anti-inflammatory mechanisms underlying these benefits remain to be completely understood.

Methods: Mice were pretreated with EA or sham EA therapy 5 days prior to the induction of endotoxemia through the administration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and cecal ligation and puncture (CLP).

Background And Purpose: Esophageal cancer-related gene-4 (ECRG4) participate in inflammation process and can interact with the innate immunity complex TLR4-MD2-CD14 on human granulocytes. In addition, ECRG4 participate in modulation of ion channel function and electrical activity of cardiomyocytes. However, the exact mechanism is unknown.

Mechanical ventilation is a necessary lifesaving intervention for patients with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) but it can cause ventilator induced lung injury (VILI), which contributes to the high ARDS mortality rate (≈40%). Bedside determination of optimally lung-protective ventilation settings is challenging because the evolution of VILI is not immediately reflected in clinically available, patient-level, data. The goal of this work was therefore to test ventilation waveform-derived parameters that represent the degree of ongoing VILI and can serve as targets for ventilator adjustments.

The type 2 scavenger receptor CD36 functions not only as a long chain fatty acid transporter, but also as a pro-inflammatory mediator. Ceramide is the simple N-acylated form of sphingosine and exerts distinct biological activity depending on its acyl chain length. Six ceramide synthases (CerS) in mammals determine the chain length of ceramide species, and CerS6 mainly produces C16-ceramide.

Electroacupuncture pretreatment maintains mitochondrial quality control via HO-1/MIC60 signaling pathway to alleviate endotoxin-induced acute lung injury.

Biochim Biophys Acta Mol Basis Dis

Electroacupuncture has been demonstrated to mitigate endotoxin-induced acute lung injury by enhancing mitochondrial function. This study investigates whether electroacupuncture confers lung protection through the regulation of mitochondrial quality control mediated by heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and the mitochondrial inner membrane protein MIC60. HO-1, an inducible stress protein, is crucial for maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis and protecting against lung injury.
