Background & Aim: Dysmotility, nausea and vomiting are common among children with cerebral palsy. This study aimed to evaluate influence of protein composition on rate of gastric emptying and study the relation between gastric emptying and postprandial gastrointestinal symptoms.

Methods: 15 children with cerebral palsy, using gastrostomy, received four liquid test meals on separate days in random order. The meals contained a standard carbohydrate and fat base plus one of four protein modules (100% casein (A), hydrolysed whey (B), amino acids (C) and 40% casein/60% whey (D)) with a total energy of 1 kcal/ml. The (13)C octanoic acid breath test was applied to assess gastric emptying.

Results: When comparing half emptying time (T(1/2)) of the fast emptying meals (meal B, C and D) with the slowest emptying meal (meal A), more rapid emptying was demonstrated for meal D (p < 0.001). For meal D, emptying was significantly faster in children with postprandial symptoms than in those without (p < 0.01).

Conclusion: In children with cerebral palsy using gastrostomy, gastric emptying is influenced by type of protein in the meal. The present results also suggest that there is a relation between rapid gastric emptying and postprandial gastrointestinal symptoms. CLINICALTRIALS.GOV: UUSKBK 28200706.

Sourdough bread consumption has been associated with improved glucose and appetite regulation thanks to the presence of organic acids produced during fermentation of the flour-water mixture. We investigated the effects of whole meal sourdough bread (WSB) rich in lactic acid on energy intake, satiety, gastric emptying, glucose, and C-peptide response compared to whole meal yeast bread (WYB). Forty-four normal-weight participants (age: 30 ± 10 y; BMI: 23 ± 2 kg/m) participated in this double-blind, randomized cross-over trial, consisting of two study visits separated by one week.

Introduction: Nonfunctioning pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (NF-PNETs) have been diagnosed increasingly often but still represent rare pancreatic neoplasms. Surgery is a potentially curative approach for patients with NF-PNETs. In recent years, minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has been applied more frequently for surgical resection of NF-PNETs.

Background: Laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy is a safe and effective surgical method for treating benign and malignant tumors of the pancreatic body and tail. However, laparoscopic surgery requires good intraoperative exposure, and since the pancreas is obstructed by the stomach and duodenum, making surgical operations and the management of intraoperative emergencies challenging. Therefore, gastric traction is crucial in laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy.

Gastric ulcers often cause postprandial epigastric pain, especially in acute cases. Abnormal motility, with about 50 % of patients having delayed gastric emptying, contributes to ulcer development. Costunolide (COS) and dehydrocostuslactone (DEH), derived from "Mu xiang" herbs, show potential in treating ulcers and regulating gastrointestinal motility.

Gastroretentive systems have gained attention due to their prolonged retention time in the human body, and they have the potential to improve treatment effects, simplify treatment regimens, and improve patient compliance. Among these systems, expandable gastroretentive systems (EGRSs) have emerged as an important type of carrier that can reside in the stomach for a desired period through on-demand expansion for drug delivery, obesity intervention, and medical diagnosis. As the physiological environment significantly influences the performance of EGRSs, here, the physiological factors such as the stomach's physiological structure and activity pattern, and the character of gastric juice are summarized.
