The generation of near-IR surface plasmon resonance in gold-coated tilted fiber Bragg gratings is strongly dependent on both the polarization state of the transmission light and the property of confining materials (including the coating materials and surrounding media). These dependencies can be advantageously used to demodulate the amplitude spectrum and retrieve the surrounding refractive index. In this paper, we present an automated demodulation technique that measures the surrounding refractive index by comparing the differential amplitude of resonance peaks near the plasmon attenuation for two orthogonal amplitude spectra recorded in the same operating conditions. A mean sensitivity of more than 500 nm per refractive index unit is reported. This new refractive index measurement method is shown to be accurate to 5×10(-5) over a full range of 0.01 in water solutions.

The current study used sustainable and green approaches to convey polymer composites with desired optical properties. The extracted green tea dye (GTD) enriched with ligands was used to synthesize zinc metal complexes. Green chitosan biopolymer incorporated with green synthesized metal complex using casting technique was used to deliver polymer composites with improved optical properties.

In this study, we demonstrate a novel and efficient fabrication methodology for nonclose-packed, two-dimensional (2D) colloidal crystals exhibiting square lattice structures. In our recent work, we detailed the formation of 2D colloidal crystals via the electrostatic adsorption of three-dimensional (3D) charged colloidal crystals onto oppositely charged substrates. These 3D colloidal crystals possessed a face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice structure with their (111) planes aligned parallel to the substrate, facilitating the formation of 2D crystals with triangular lattice arrangements upon adsorption.

We propose herein a metamaterial (MM) dual-band THz sensor for various biomedical sensing applications. An MM is a material engineered to have a particular property that is rarely observed in naturally occurring materials with an aperiodic subwavelength arrangement. MM properties across a wide range of frequencies, like high sensitivity and quality factors, remain challenging to obtain.

Purpose: Changes in choroidal thickness (ChT) are proposed to predict myopia development but evidence is mixed. We investigated time courses of choroidal responses, following different types of dynamic artificial stimulation in chicks with and without spectacle lenses, as well as changes in retinal dopamine metabolism and expression of candidate genes.
Methods: Chicks were kept in an arena surrounded by computer monitors presenting dynamic checkerboard fields of small, medium and large size.

Introduction: Accommodation is the process of changing the ocular lens' refractive power and focal distance. This process involves application of biomechanical forces on the lens by the surrounding musculature. Previous studies have demonstrated that the lens epithelium demonstrates mechanotransduction and that tension influences its chemical activity.
