Vertically aligned double- and single-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs and SWNTs) were synthesized on a substrate at 590 °C by hot-filament chemical vapor deposition. An optimized combination of iron and aluminum layers as the catalyst resulted in iron particles ranging from 1-5 nm floating in an aluminum matrix after annealing. Selective synthesis of DWNTs and SWNTs from such particles was achieved by adjusting the dilution ratio of acetylene that was used as the source gas. The yield of DWNTs among all CNTs was as high as 81%, while that of SWNTs was almost 100%. The diameter distribution of DWNTs was narrow, with a standard deviation of about 12%.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of attachment design on maxillary molar distalization and simultaneous expansion during distalization, and the influence of third molars on distalization in the clear aligner technique using the finite element method.
Methods: Six models were created to evaluate three different attachment designs on the second molars. Model I: employed a vertical rectangular attachment; Model II: used a vertical rectangular attachment with the presence of the third molar; Model III: used a combined semi-elliptical attachment; and Model IV: featured an opposed semi-elliptical attachment with buccal and palatal components.

In the early Drosophila embryo, germband elongation is driven by oriented cell intercalation through t1 transitions, where vertical (dorsal-ventral aligned) interfaces contract and then resolve into new horizontal (anterior-posterior aligned) interfaces. Here, we show that contractile events produce a continuous "rectification" of cell interfaces, in which interfaces systematically rotate toward more vertical orientations. As interfaces rotate, their behavior transitions from elongating to contractile regimes, indicating that the planar polarized identities of cell-cell interfaces are continuously re-interpreted in time depending on their orientation angle.

We report an experimental study on how topological defects induced by cylindrical air inclusions in the ferroelectric nematic liquid crystal RM734 are influenced by ionic doping, including an ionic surfactant and ionic polymer. Our results show that subtle differences in molecular structure can lead to distinct surface alignments and topological defects. The ionic surfactant induces a planar alignment, with two -1/2 line defects adhering to the cylindrical bubble surface.

The traditional perfluorosulfonic acid proton exchange membrane is crucial for proton exchange membrane fuel cells, but its high cost has impeded broader commercialization. In this study, a novel concept of a cost-effective and stable vertically aligned polydopamine-intercalated montmorillonite membrane (VAPMM) is introduced. 2D nanochannels formed within the lamellar structure of polydopamine-coated montmorillonite nanosheets provide a significant stable in-plane proton conductivity of 0.

Our findings reveal a diminishing role of vertical ties (parents-children) and an increasing significance of horizontal ties (between siblings). Specifically, brothers who were first in the sibling group to marry exerted more influence on socio-economic persistence over time, aligning with the changes in familial dynamics since proto-industrialization.
