We studied the growth mode of vertically aligned carbon nanofibers (CNFs) on Ni catalyst strips fabricated using a focused ion beam (FIB). We found that the CNF growth on Ni catalysts was strongly affected by the geometry of the microfabricated Ni catalyst strips. Selective growth of vertically aligned CNFs requires ion milling from the outside edge of the sample so that the milled materials are effectively evacuated. The CNF diameter and density on the strip depends on its width. Possible mechanisms to control CNF growth using microfabricated catalysts are analyzed with a liquid model using surface free energies.

Enhancing Hydrogen Evolution Reaction through Coalescence-Induced Bubble Departure on Patterned Gold-Silicon Microstrip Surfaces.

Hydrogen bubble adhesion to the electrode presents a major obstacle for green hydrogen generation via the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) as it would induce undesired overpotential and undermine the reaction efficiency by reducing reaction area, increasing transport resistance, and creating an undesired ion concentration gradient. While electrodes with aerophobic/hydrophilic surfaces have been developed to facilitate bubble detachment, they primarily rely on micro- and nanostructured catalyst surfaces to enhance buoyance-induced bubble departure. Here, we demonstrate that introducing nonreactive yet more hydrophilic surfaces can promote coalescence-induced bubble departure, thereby significantly reducing the transport overpotential and improving HER performance.

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are markers of drug-resistant pathogens, monitoring them contributes to prevent resistance to drugs. The detection methods for ARGs including PCR and isothermal amplification are sensitive and selective. However, it may take several hours or cannot be used on spot.

One method for the colorimetric detection of hydrogen peroxide vapor is based on a titanium-hydrogen peroxide complex. A color changing material based on a titania hydroxypropyl cellulose thin film was initially developed. However, as this material dries, the sensitivity of the material is significantly reduced.

The utilization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as fluorescent sensors for the detection of environmental and chemical reagent pollutants as well as heterogeneous catalysis for CO conversion represents a crucial avenue of research with significant implications for the protection of human health. In this work, a Tb(III)-based three-dimensional metal-organic framework, [Tb(L)·4DMF] (Tb-MOF) (HL = 5'-(4-carboxy-3-hydroxyphenyl)-3,3″-dihydroxy-[1,1':3',1″-terphenyl]-4,4″-dicarboxylic acid), has been structurally conformed by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. It possesses a 1D rhombus channel along the [010] direction, featuring a pore size of 6.

School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Shanxi University, Taiyuan, PR China; Institute of Advanced Functional Materials and Devices, Shanxi University, Taiyuan, PR China; Institute for Carbon-Based Thin Film Electronics, Peking University, Shanxi (ICTFE-PKU), Taiyuan, PR China. Electronic address:

In this study, the N-Acetyl-l-Cysteine (NAC)-capped gold and silver bimetallic nanoclusters (NAC@Au-Ag NCs) was synthesized by reflux method. Due to the silver effect, the NAC@Au-Ag NCs exhibited strong photoluminescence at far-red/near-infrared regions and better catalytic performance than Au or Ag NCs. Upon addition of HS, the Au-Ag NCs exhibited obvious fluorescence quench and color changes through the generation of metal sulfides and a static quenching process.
